So I am getting these random system hangs when playing trails of cold steel 3. The system becomes unresponsive for a bit and then comes back (I think it's running out of memory?), however when it does finally become responsive, the KDE desktop is no longer working replaced by a black screen.

What I have tried

  • Different kernel versions (including vanilla lts)

  • Fully updating my system

  • Checks for HW defects (Testing ram checking temps etc..)

Logs

Filter to just the time of the incident as a full log is too long to post on a Pastebin

EDIT: the last one got a password protected for some reason

EDIT2: more complete log paste

EDIT3:It set another password again for some reason :weary:

From taking a look at the logs its seems plasma memory leaked and anicy killed it?

Freezing Questionnaire/Checklist:

Have you posted the output of the garuda-inxi command?

yes see the beginning of the post

Have you provided a full history of fixes attempted?

yes see what I have tried section

Have you checked for errors/segfaults/crash dumps, and posted your logs?

yes see the above private bin post

Have you given at least 3 alternate kernels a test out? which ones?

Yes

  • linux-lts 5.15.37-1
  • linux 5.17.5.arch1-1
  • linux-tkg-pds-generic_v3 5.17.5-256

Have you fully updated your system?

Is your BIOS up to date?
yes

yes

resource usage

Are you getting close to maxing out your ram at any time?

I was before I upgraded to 32GB

Have you checked your system temperatures?

yes, never exceeds 60c on both the CPU and GPU

Did this issue start recently after an update?

not as far as I can tell been having freezes and performance issues for about a month now

If this started recently, have you tried performing a rollback via a snapshot?

N/A

Can you recall making any config changes about when this issue began?

No

Have you tried disabling the baloo file indexer temporarily?

I always disable baloo on KDE

Have you tried disabling all network adapters temporarily?

yes found that does help and noticed system freezes seem to be tied to steam

Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in your browser?

yes I also make sure to close out any browsers that are running when I am gaming or not using them, doesn't seem to help much

Have you tried disabling BTRFS Quotas (groups)?

yes noticed I was getting really bad performance whenever a btrfs maintenance task was run (I have it set up to run a balance and a filesystem check every now and then) and this helped with that so that was part of the reason for my hangs

Have you run a BTRFS balancing operation?

If you press the CAPS or NUMLOCK key, does your KB state light change?
yes

Is your CAPS or NUMLOCK LED blinking? (kernel panic indicator)

no, and no kernel panic messages in the logs as far as I can tell

yes

Can you move your mouse cursor, but clicking has no effect?

Yes I can move my mouse cursor but clicking has a delayed effect

Do you have full keyboard functionality?

yes

Is this a complete freeze-up with no keyboard or mouse responsiveness?

no, but the system performs very slowly

Does pressing CTRL+T open a terminal?

after a while yes

Does pressing CTRL+ALT+F2 get you to a TTY?

after awhile yes

Have you tried restarting your system from the terminal or TTY?

yes I usually switch to another TTY and press ctrl+alt+del to reboot when the issue happens

Have you tried to remote in from another computer via ssh?

Yes again it is very slow and unresponsive

Have you tried to ping your machine from another computer?

Can you use the Magic SysRq key to restart/shutdown?

yes

Have you tried changing your compositor settings?

Have you tried disabling your compositor entirely?

I disable my compositor when gaming

Greetings. i will try to assist. So please, how much RAM you have in your system?
Also, be aware , Ryzen CPUs (not all but some of them due wrong microcoding programming) when the C6 state is on 'Auto' on your motherboard BIOS, can freeze and crash the system. So solution I had with my freezing installations too, was to change the C6 state option from 'Auto' to 'Typical' or ' 'Normal' depends how named by motherboard manufacturer.
Try the second 'tip' if you have large amount of memory.

I could see it overheating with this failed service. And you know where that leads.

Thanks everyone for the tips

fans are still working though but at the curves set at bios. the software curves are not working never could fix that so I haven’t bothered my CPU never exceeds 70c anyways nor does my GPU(always check my temps like I said in the OP)

I have 32GB of ram (just recently upgraded from a 2x 8GB to a 2x 16GB)

So maybe could be related? I have heard of this but I thought it only happened to zen 1 processors? so 1800x, for example, this is a 2600x so it’s zen+ which I thought fixed the issue? Doesn’t hurt to try though right? or will it impact performance?

Yeah, I’ve been getting some issues with btrfs before so I have disabled quotas, but maybe that wasn’t enough or didn’t fix it…

Sometimes deleting your stored snapshots then performing a btrfs balancing helps with random freezes. Be sure to reboot.

No will not hurt performance . But can make your system more stable. Even some 3000 series ryzen had similar issue so you don't lose something to try ^

So Found the option in my bios but it only has a setting of auto, manual or disabled and manual just sets it to auto so possible a bios issue there

Also, I found That the issue seems to happen (at least I think) when steam is downloading something in the background CPU usage goes way up (90-100%) when downloading a game and the system becomes very slow

I edited the OP to include the troubleshooting questionnaire and some answers to it (which Im working on)

What motherboard brand you have?
Mine is Asus and has the options .

That’s what garuda-inxi is for

so I have done a balance and rebooted and I'm still getting system unresponsiveness while downloading a steam game. Asked about this in several discords and this seems to actually be normal behavior when using a ryzen 5 with gigabit speeds?

EDIT: don't know why I find this github issue

so yes it is normal and can be solved by

  1. not allowing downloads while playing a game
  2. limiting your download speed to something lower like 200 Mbps in the steam settings
