-FIRST POST- Setup-Assistant (Newbie Recommendations)

Hello,

This is my first post on the Garuda Linux Forum.

I've booted-up Garuda KDE Dr460nized (Talon) Edition on bare-metal just recently (which is more than capable of supporting Garuda and runs entirely on AMD hardware) ...and so far, everything seems to be working post-installation.

I'll admit, this is the first time I have ever booted-up a distro, so my familiarity with some of the software packages provided (e.g. Additional Software Centers, Kernels and Development Tools) are a bit limited, even after doing some research.

Because of this, I would like to know if any of you fellow Garudians have recommendations that I could pick and choose from the Setup-Assistant; perhaps based on the kind of uses (provided in a list down below), that a GNU/Linux newbie like myself plans to take full advantage of on a completely new PC.

The last thing I would want is to install some of the package-types mentioned above, only to find that one may conflict with another.

If necessary, I can share a list of all the software packages that I plan to install. Again, I'm open to any suggestions.

Note: My machine was specifically built to house a singular GNU/Linux-based environment (no dual-booting), and eliminate the use of proprietary and non-free/closed-source software.

Also, I don't know if this is important but...
For reference: My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X (6-core)

Uses: Audio/Sound Design (DAW), Gaming, Video Editing/Rendering, 3D Modelling/Rendering (+Game Engine Manipulation), Digital Media Storage, Amateur/Non-professional Programming, VR Gaming

Side-Note: This is probably unrelated (and I haven't thoroughly checked the ArchWiki on this one), but I have a blank external SSD (Samsung T7) that's formatted in NTFS and "requires" proprietary software in order to be accessed. If possible, are there any tools that can be used in a Arch-based environment like Garuda, which I could access and store data within the particular SSD?

Best & Thank you,

First of all can you provide your

garuda-inxi

so we may help

My apologies -
I’ll get to it ASAP

I’m also using a different machine and have hardly touched my new build [containing Garuda].

I’ve never shared system information anywhere before, so this is also new to me.

Hello, thanks for the guide!
Every bit of information helps.

Sorry for the confusion, but is there any way I could share the terminal/konsole input and output through a separate machine? I’m not using Garuda at the moment.

I may be wrong but if it,s not on then no you can not

I know the screenshot feature exists for a reason, but I'm just unsure about messing around with the distro if I haven't yet touched the Setup-Assistant.

Please Please mess with the distro break it reinstall it many times but trust me it,s the best way to learn  No one here will knock you for trying  And will help if they can :+1:

If that's the case, can the Setup-Assistant be used more than once?

Yes just re run it

Okay - My apologies

I genuinely love the variety of software the Setup-Assistant provides and it is one of the features that made me gravitate towards not only GNU/Linux, but an Arch-based distro like Garuda alone.

*Stating this as someone who dabbled with Debian and Mint.

I guess it's time to fire up the machine and take a gander.
I'll (hopefully) keep up to date with this post - nowhere is it my intention to ever hop onto another distro anyways.

Thank you for your communication.

Hello,

Been exploring Garuda for a bit now - and all I can say, is that this is a remarkably solid distro!

So... All I have to do is copy/paste garuda-inxi into the konsole?

Also, is it normal to have a log-in registered as "Windows" on this forum, even though a machine in current use is anything but?

From template

Please post the terminal/konsole input and output as text (no pictures) from the following command:

garuda-inxi

Where?
If you use FireDaragon Browser, it is a security setting.

  1. My apologies, I really have not explored Garuda since. Updating ASAP!

  2. I'm on it. Never have I shared system information before, so this is new territory for me. Again, thank you for providing a helpful guide that I will definitely need in the future. Been looking into some NTFS-related posts too, I'm sure I'll find something.

I think SGS already pointed this out, but I wanted to explicitly state that it IS normal. But as someone who’s used firedragon for the past month, it will make you do a double-take almost everytime

You also mentioned recommended apps (I think) to familiarize yourself. Dr460nized edition comes with a lot imo. I do like Gedit over Kate for GUI text editor, but they both rock. I would snag Tor-browser, Kleopatra, and Discord (Tho this last one is frowned upon for good reason–don’t yell at me I can’t get a matrix client that I understand yet lol)

I think you mentioned a worry of dependency issues, but I think if you avoid all google packages, you’ll be relatively safe.

EDIT: Forgot to add Neovim for all programming needs, kdenlive for all video editing needs, gimp for all image editing needs. For VR gaming…Wine, I guess? Who really likes VR, tho?
