Thanks for clearing up some confusion I had with the Firedragon browser (which is fantastic nevertheless).
I kinda live under a rock haha, so I know little to nothing about using Discord; let-alone the majority of communication-related software/apps out there. If anything happens to be proprietary, I naturally just stay away - less of a headache. Besides, I think I would be better off with something like Mumble.
As for recommendations, I was mostly concerned about the extra Software Centers, Kernels and some Download managers provided with the Setup-Assistant. They all seem useful, but I don't know... I just scraped the surface of an Arch-based distro like Garuda.
EDIT: Not big on VR either, it's mostly just to have for the sake of compatibility and the fact that my GPU can support such... and Half-Life: Alyx has been really tempting to me haha
I don't personally know anyone that uses mumble, but thats dope.
I use octopi like once a week just to see if a package exists and if so what version, because I already understand pacman relatively well (Basic pacman is rudimentary af)
They say having backup kernels is important for troubleshooting, but its never helped me lol. I'm literally running hardened rn just to prove running different kernels almost never helps faulty systems(17 hours of uptime, I'm nervous tho)
I wouldn't worry about extra software on the setup. Installing later with pacman -Syu is easy enough, trust me.
Sweet
I'll check out Octopi and maybe most of the software centers (besides Pamac). I do want to learn at least a couple of things
Don't want to encounter too many issues in the long-run, so I'll keep this post up and look further into choosing a Kernel or two. Next stop is the Arch-Wiki
Thanks for your communication, every bit of it helps.
I actually know nothing about fish (I've only been daily-driving garuda for a monthish).
There might be some precautions to take, but it's that easy on zsh, and fish is supposed to be a better zsh that just isn't ever going to be POSIX-Compliant.
Where you place the alias line of code might matter. I would avoid the last if block of code altogether, but that's just me. I would wait a few minutes for a mod to correct me if I were you lol
It's unnecessary to fill the forum with posts like, thanks, helped me, or similar (it's also in the guidelines somewhere).
If something was helpful or you like what was posted, just click on the heart
Not really. I think Apper comes with kde already by default but I might be wrong.
If you intend to stick with dragonized kde environment, you shouldn't need any of these, although I wouldn't mindlessly remove appimage launcher out of safety habits if its already installed, I would leave it be lol
Garuda makes decision making easy because most defaults are already a 'best choice' if you catch my drift.
It is absolutely my intention to stay with Dr460nized. I guess I'll stick with Octopi based on what you described about safety habits and not tinkering around too much with defaults.
On a side-note, do you have any experience with Discover or GNOME-software?
Yes, but not on garuda. You will not need almost any GNOME packages on your KDE install lool
I really think you're over-complicating the initial setup. If you don't know what it is or have experience with it, you are almost certainly NOT going to ever need it, so don't install it lol. Trust me I will personally help you install anything you don't get from the default list of apps, and I really can't stress this enough, there won't be much needed, even for gaming friend.
If it makes you feel better every box you tick just adds another sudo pacman -S somePackageName which you can still do manually yourself after the setup is finished. Maybe you are practicing too much caution? Breaking things is how you learn, tho I am still stupid and have broke everything ever soooo YMMV
EDIT: On a reread, this might give the impression that what you select has potential to break your system, and that is not what I meant. Pick whatever you want or are curious about, but no selections will leave you with regrets, I promise!
This is the first time I have ever personally booted-up a distro onto bare metal, so I don't know exactly what to expect out of making certain decisions that are simple as selecting software packages haha
EDIT: That's good to hear. Dramatically breaking the system is what I'm highly concerned about and in no way do I consider myself an exploitative user. Yet again, that's what the screenshot tool is for.
