WiFi update issue

I updated my laptop earlier and an issue has arisen that I’ve never had before. Prior to the update I used WiFi without issue via…

…and it was used to enable the smart bit of my TV [i.e. playing YouTube videos on my TV].

I updated my laptop with the following earlier…

hwloc-2.10.0-1 iw-6.7-1 linux-zen-6.6.8.zen1-1 linux-zen-headers-6.6.8.zen1-1 netpbm-10.86.39-2 python-setuptools-1:69.0.2-1 tzdata-2023d-1

The WiFi no longer worked, so something here caused a problem. The above software no longer created a hotspot - I checked to see if the WiFi was enabled and it was, so I’m somewhat baffled.

I have ultimately used the btrfs snapper to return my laptop to its previous state and the WiFi is working again.

If it’s a kernel problem I’ll simply wait until then next one appears before I update again.

I’ve noticed the same weird issue with this after updating recently too where the Wi-Fi didn’t want to work (using the same intel Wi-Fi chip but on desktop).
Somehow disabling and starting back up the wireless networking fixed it (using KDE’s UI options at least; I assume Gnome does a similar/same command by using the UI). On restarts, it seems like I don’t have to repeat this process either.

garuda-inxi of this machine just in case:

Thanks for the info. I’ll give it a try tomorrow.

Just out of curiosity, I’ve been shown the following error in the terminal for the last couple of days…

warning: garuda-settings-manager: local (1.0.2-5) is newer than garuda (1.0.2-3)

Could this be a part of the problem?

Considering that package does this:
“Garuda Linux system settings (Manjaro settings manager ported to work with Arch standards and limited to only DKMS drivers)”
And that the driver for the Wi-Fi isn’t even DKMS and just part of the kernel instead, I don’t think this package has anything to do with it.

Warnings like this are a pretty common question on these forums and the team usually just say it is safe to ignore them. (I usually get like 4 warnings like this saying something is newer locally)

I did the update again…

…and unfortunately the problem returned. I turned the wifi on and off again numerous times, but every time the WiFi hotspot software came to the “getting running info…” bit it returned “Not running” regardless of how many times the WiFi was turned on and off.

I tried using the WiFi hotspot built into gnome, but my TV wouldn’t work with it and I also got the warning that it was not a secure connection (WPA).

There is obviously something in the update which is throwing a spanner in the works.

I am now going to undo the update…

Have you tried other kernels yet?

I would suggest trying the LTS, hardened, and mainline kernels before others.

I’ve restored my laptop to its previous setup and thing are working again.

I’ll leave changing kernels until after the next update as it’s something I want to avoid if possible.

@Colin just out of curiosity, have you ever tried installing a kernel with Garuda?

Installing a kernel is far simpler with Garuda than many other distros you might have used in the past. It’s practically a breeze, even if you’ve never done it before. You don’t need to use the terminal or compile the kernel manually with Garuda. It can all be done in a matter of minutes through the GUI Garuda Settings Manager utility (Kernel subsection). It’s all pretty quick and painless, really.

It is also highly recommended to keep a backup kernel such as the LTS kernel installed at all times in addition to your regular kernel anyways. This is a good precaution to take just in case one of those very rare show stopping kernel bugs ever rears its ugly head. That way you should always have a working kernel like the LTS to fall back on in case of an emergency.

Once you’ve installed a new kernel you simply boot into the alternate kernel from grub’s “advanced” menu. Easy peasy.

Installing another kernel should almost always be your first troubleshooting step whenever you experience a bug of a major nature.

I attempted to use the Garuda Settings Manager but unfortunately it too is not working. All of the other Garuda tools are working, but for some reason the settings manager isn’t. :man_shrugging:

I cleared a lot of old software off my laptop a couple of months ago, maybe this has caused some issues.

It seems that trying to keep this version of Garuda Gnome working will be more trouble than its worth, so I’m backing up what I need and am getting a fresh Gnome install next week.

At the end of the day this install has worked nearly flawlessly for more than 18 months, so I’m not complaining.

I’ll make a note of the above and most likely keep an LTS kernel close at hand in case of emergency.

In what sense does it not work?
If you get errors like this you might try installing the -git version

@filo and @tbg: The “normal” version of the garuda settings manager does not open, without an error message.

I used the Settings Manager approx 6 months ago to look at the available kernels, but when I tried to run it this time nothing happened - the tool didn’t open.

I am going to get an OS update regardless, my system is in need of e refresh. This seems a fitting time to do it.

Use the garuda-settings-manager-git as filo suggested. Check out the linked topic. The git version works without any issues.

You can also install the kernel via terminal

sudo pacman -S linux-lts linux-lts-headers

after that: reboot, select advanced options from grub menu, choose linux-lts and hit ENTER.

Thanks for the feedback.

I’ll download the lts kernels as you suggest after my laptop has a new version of Garuda Gnome on it.

Update:

A few minutes ago I decided to have a quick look at the downloads which were ready to download, and one of them happened to be the Linux WiFi hotspot. I was curious as to whether this could provide a fix to my initial problem, so I downloaded the files, installed them and rebooted. I then turned on the wifi and then fired up the wifi hotspot.

It worked :man_dancing:

I then tried to install garuda-settings-manager-git, but it conflicted with garuda-settings-manager.

I then decided to uninstall the garuda-settings-manager, but when I saw the terminal output I decided to give it a miss…

I’ve decided to let sleeping dogs lie and adopt the position that discretion is the better part of valour - I ain’t going to try and fix something that’s not broken.

The initial problem is solved, and I’m happy with that.

pacman -Rs can be very aggressive; I generally advise against using it unless there are only a few packages on the line. Instead, you can use pacman -R (or -Rc if needed), then remove orphans afterward with the cleanup function.

In the case of replacing one package with another like in this example, no need to uninstall anything beforehand. Just install the new package and it will prompt you if anything needs to be removed. Probably these two packages have the same or very similar dependencies.
