On login, Background on one screen is missing and right-click menu doesn't display

Hello forum family. I am having a strange issue that has persisted for a while. I thought that it may have been kernel related so I didn't want to post anything until I ruled that out. After trying a few different kernels, the problem is still present. When powering on the system, the left monitor display will sometimes be blank. The wallpaper is missing but Latte Dock is present and fully functional. If I attempt to right-click, the menu does no appear. Moving to other monitor on the right, I can bring the right-click menu up without issue. I tried to search for a solution but did not find anything similar.

I have an MSI RX 580 Armor 4GB Graphics Card that is basically new and have run UNIGINE Benchmarks with no issues reported. Overall everything looks and runs great. When I reboot, it sometimes clears the issue. Any help or tips would be most welcomed.

Trying to reproduce now but I am unable to provide you with the screen shot you requested. Everything looks good after a reboot. This seems to only happens when the system has been powered down for a while, at least a few hours. I'm making some assumptions here. I would happily provide you with any command output you wish, I'm just unable to provide the screenshot at this time. I will capture it tomorrow. It usually happens when I get home from work and power the system on.

I unfortunately do not have a solution for your problem but just to add:
I have the same problem and I blamed the driver but now I think it may be more related to the compositor. I'm using the zen kernel with an NVidia RTX 3080 (Inxi nothingTVatYT@garuda1)

Temporally switching the primary monitor brings back the background and any windows/menus. That means I click on the Display Configuration, Advanced Display Settings and on any of the secondary monitors click on "Primary" and apply. Then you can switch back to your preferred primary and apply again. A bit annoying but at least you don't have to reboot.

Here is the screen shot you requested. Sorry it took me so long. The issue is intermittent. As you can see, the left monitor does not have the wallpaper and you do not see a menu pop-up if you right click. The Latte Dock is there, which functions fine, and the application menu and top panel are also there with full functionality as well. Not sure what to make of this.

I did try your work around but alas, it did not work for me. Rebooting is the only thing that clears the issue.

what openGL's version do you use ?
try "linux-lts" kernel and default openGL version (2.0)

I installed the "linux-lts" kernel. I am facing the same issue.

I'm not sure about the OpenGL version (2.0). I don't think that is the default version. The graphics card definitely supports up to version 4.5. MSI Radeon RX 580 ARMOR 4G OC - DataSheet

I'm not sure how to even go about changing the OpenGL version.

@thunder-son I did eventually find where I could switch the OpenGL versions in Display Configuration > Compositor. I tried that as well with the "linux-lts" kernel and it did not work. I had the same issue. This is so strange. BTW, when I loaded the "linux-lts" kernel, it would not allow me to connect to wifi. I'm sure this was just something I would need to configure by enabling some driver, but I thought since we were troubleshooting, it was worth mentioning.

works for me!, i have this same issue in others kde distro, idk what is it

I'm happy that solved your issue but I did not solve mine. If there is more information that is needed to assist with troubleshooting, please let me know and I will provide it. At this point, I have tried the suggestions and the issue persists.

A couple of troubleshooting suggestions you might want to test.

Do not start Latte automatically, disable it from autostarting. After boot up, then start Latte manually in the terminal. Post any error messages thrown by latte.

Restart the kwin compositor after you are logged in to see if there is any difference.

I will try that and post back with results.

I would also like to ask, are there any log files that would be useful. I can reboot and post the results if that would also help. I may just need a nudge on what command to run and where the logs you may need are located. Apologies for my ignorance, I am very green when it comes to Arch but my google-fu is strong

Thank you Garuda Team!

I disabled Latte from autostarting and ran it manually in the terminal. Here is the output:

I also restarted the Kwin compositor and the functionality comes back. This is the command I used:

Well that is somewhat good news. Kwin has been causing issues on a few other threads I’ve responded to as well. I have suggested switching to one of the alternate versions of kwin (there are quite a few), but that supposedly did not help in that case. However, it still may be worth trying the different kwin variations as your cause could be different than the other case I was dealing with.

It also wouldn’t hurt to try various different combinations of settings for your compositor in the KDE System Settings.

I have tried alternating them. The problem persists. As of right now, there does not seem to be a widespread issue affecting multiple users. This may just affect my system and it is intermittent. As such, I think it prudent to ask the Garuda Team if they would like me to mark this as being solved to close the thread out since the suggestions presented here have worked for other members?

If your issue still persists I would leave your thread open.

I will keep it open at your direction until a solution has been identified.
