NVIDIA drivers not running on start-up

Hey Folks!

I have an NVIDIA issue…probably.

I try to be good about updating every time I start my PC.
Come home from work yesterday to only one of my monitors
displaying anything.

First thought: Check to make sure our drivers are running.
Sure enough, output of nvidia-smi is:

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

That’s weird, but not unduely so.
Go check my NVIDIA packages with pacman -Qs nvidia and see:

Now, I don’t exactly know what I’m looking at here.
But it looks to me like the drivers are installed correctly.

To double check, I go to Hardware Configuration in Garuda Settings Manager. Everything looks in order, but clearly isn’t so I reinstalled video-nvidia-dkmsvia the provided context menu in the GUI, then Reboot. No success there.

I then consulted the Forum, thinking perhaps someone recently had the same issue as I did. I found these posts:

Neither of which provided much in the ways of solutions to my problem although I did read through them and attempt installing linux-znver4-headers to see if that might fix the problem (as you can likely guess it has not).

I am, regrettably, at the end of my ability to solve this problem alone.

It is potentially (and I suspect likely) a simple oversight I have made
due to my comparative new-ness.

I beseech thee, oh wizards of Unix, what have I done wrong?

Thank you for the reply!

after looking through the snapshots, none of them seem to get past the part of the load sequence that is Starting Switch Root.

Specifically, it says:

[FAILED] Failed to start Switch Root.
See 'systemctl status initrd-switch-root.service' for details.

Generating "/run/initramfs/rdsosreport.txt"

Entering emergency mode. Exit the shell to continue.
Type "journalctl" to view system logs.
You might want to save "/run/initramfs/rdsosreport.txt" to a USB stick or /boot
after mounting them and attach it to a bug report.

Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked.
See sulogin(8) man page for more details.

Press Enter to continue.

Pressing Enter to continue generates one further line of text:

Failed to connect to system scope bus via local transport: No such file or directory

Before repeating the bulk of the previous text (starting from Generating "path/to/report")

To be clear, I can load into Garuda like normal from the GRUB menu. It just doesn’t seem to switch on the NVIDIA drivers.

Thank you again for the message, I’ll take whatever help I can get in resolving this.

just an idea .Before chance drivers and after install. helped me (but for amd drivers).

maybe you try to rebuild the initramfs before ?

sudo dracut-rebuild

Hey! Thanks for the response.

I tried running sudo dracut-rebuild before and after going through the reinstall in the Hardware Config.

Regrettably, it has not solved the issue.

I would recommend trying to get rid of all these tkg packages, and try installing the packages recommended for your hardware in the ArchWiki. See this chart here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#Installation. You have a Turing card so the recommended package for your kernel is nvidia-open-dkms.

I am guessing you followed the guidance here for getting those other packages installed: GitHub - Frogging-Family/nvidia-all: Nvidia driver latest to 396 series AIO installer. Fortunately, they also have some guidance for uninstalling and reverting to normal packages:

GitHub - Frogging-Family/nvidia-all: Nvidia driver latest to 396 series AIO installer

How to uninstall and revert to distro provided packages

For arch and its derivatives you can uninstall using:

sudo pacman -Rdd lib32-nvidia-utils-tkg lib32-opencl-nvidia-tkg nvidia-dkms-tkg nvidia-egl-wayland-tkg nvidia-settings-tkg nvidia-utils-tkg opencl-nvidia-tkg

And install the distro dkms packages:

sudo pacman -S nvidia-dkms egl-wayland lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia nvidia-settings opencl-nvidia nvidia-utils

Alternatively install the dkms open kernel modules (Turing or newer hardware only!!!) with:

sudo pacman -S nvidia-open-dkms egl-wayland lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia nvidia-settings opencl-nvidia nvidia-utils

After installing the drivers provided by your distro everything should function as normal after a reboot.

In your case, use the first line to uninstall and the third line to install the normal packages. Then give it a reboot and see how it goes.

Hey! Thanks for replying.

Yeah you’ve just about got it in one on why those packages are there. That must have been months ago I did that.

After following the advice of running the first and third pacman instructions we’re far closer to a complete solution. In fact, by some standards that is a solution and what I have now is a new problem (which I’m happy to make a new post about after some digging if that would be more proper).

I now have the drivers back up and running. And the monitor on displayport instead of HDMI isn’t getting a signal (probably an unrelated issue to this post, but felt worth mentioning).

Updated…everything:

Thank you for helping, this is huge.

i dont know i dont have nvidia and cant test it but you can try this for boot the right driver.idk

Set Kernel Parameters :

  • Append the following kernel parameters to your bootloader configuration to ensure the NVIDIA driver is loaded correctly:
    • For GRUB:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nvidia-drm.modeset=1 nvidia-drm.fbdev=1"

i had updates few minutes ago may some fix.or reinstall 570 driver with yay. my looks little diffrent for testing.your driver isnt loaded correctly may some other tipps help.

This Dell monitor?

It is definitely detected, that output looks good as far as I can tell. Check in the KDE settings that the display was not set to disabled when the GPU drivers were missing.

Sorry! I was unclear.

There are two dell monitors who are detected and working again (thank you so much).

There is a third (a Yeyian, which would normally be my primary) that isn’t. It’s connected via DisplayPort whereas the two dells are connected via HDMI. I likewise don’t see it in the System Settings::Display Configuration menu.

One of the Dell monitors is showing that it is connected by DisplayPort.

Did you switch any cables around while you were troubleshooting?

Check also that the Yeyian monitor is set to the correct output type (i.e., not set to HDMI by accident).

Aaaaaaaaand in a move of pure technological incompetence, when I did my initial inspection of the cables last night I failed to fully plug in one of the cables.

Thanks to everyone for helping! And thank you, especially, BluishHumility for your aid. Everything appears to be working again, at the small cost of embarrassing myself in front of everyone over a weird set of packages and an unplugged cable. Gonna go mark the above answer as the solution as it’s most relevant to the title.
