"Microsoft Edge. Values you can trust!"

If only edge wasn’t the best performing browser

Back when I seriously started with PCs, so like the year 2000, that was really something. It actually mattered to the user how fast the browser was, it mattered a lot.

When I see those benchmarks today and then actually witness the speed while surfing, the difference is - to my slow primate brain - nonexistent.

So I do believe you when you say that Edge is best-performing in some benchmarks I don’t care about. Buuut
 you know
 that don’t mean much ^^

I mean in more real world cases. Benchmarks are bullshit

A quick word from our sponsors, I mean, here is a Humble Bundle of Linux Goodies that might light your socks on fire, or not. Passing it along.

Like most things software-related, this depends on the use case.

One of the clients the IT company I work for supports just migrated all users from Firefox to Edge (probably to better monitor their browser use–SaaS=Spyware as a Service ) and blocked all other browsers.

Every day since the switch we have users calling up with sites and services they have to use for work just completely broken on Edge. Some stuff has to run in IE compatibility mode to work, other stuff is broken in the compatibility mode but the feature that is supposed to switch to compatibility mode automatically based on a URL list straight up does not work, so they have to manually switch back and forth in the browser settings each time and each mode switch requires a browser restart.

Honestly it is a nightmare. This is a “real world case” where hundreds of people we do IT for hate the Edge browser because it makes it difficult or impossible to do certain parts of their job, and they are frustrated that they cannot just use Firefox, as they have for years, because on Firefox everything they need to do just works.

Honestly it breaks my heart a little bit.

To be fair, they do mention Chrome as well. Teams works pretty decently using Chromium (at least on Gnome/Wayland), while the native application has been a mess for months and months now. So good riddance to the native application, I'd say.

well... isn't Edge just Chromium with an MS-overhaul on top of it by now?

#ModernBrowser amirite?

I love how Edge asks like 4-5 questions about signing in and providing user data to Microsoft at first startup, I mean its nice that they ask but still

Accomplished spyware company Avast, known for Trojan-horsing their own users with their so-called “antivirus” software, has acquired the “I don’t care about cookies” browser extension. Consider this your warning if this is an extension you are actively using.

From the article linked below:

Avast closed down data brokerage operation Jumpshot in 2020 after a joint investigation by Vice and PCMag revealed that its antivirus programs were selling browsing data to some of the world’s largest companies, including Home Depot, Google, and Microsoft (and, disclosure, Ars Technica parent company CondĂ© Nast). The data included Google searches, GPS coordinates on Google Maps, and searches on various sites, including YouTube and PornHub. Jumpshot touted itself as “the only company that unlocked walled garden data,” and, in a now-deleted tweet, touted its ability to collect “Every search. Every click. Every buy. On every site.”

So they finally did. I wish an alternative existed - is the addon open source at least?
