[Latte Dock] The end of an era (designing a Latte-Dock free alternative dr460nized setup)

Yeah I believe it'll come with the global menu (if I read earlier in the thread correctly), but as of now we won't have the ability to grab windows from the panel like we did in Latte. I know they put in a couple feature requests upstream, you could scroll through and find them posted in this thread.

Sorry it does not.
Instead of using Global Menu it uses Window AppMenu, which, if I recall, is the same widget as any previous ISOs.

It also does not come with Active Window Control widget.

The above 3 widgets are sort of alternatives of each other and the one right now in the ISO is the same as previous Garuda versions: Window AppMenu.
However it also comes with Window Title widget so you have the full “menu-like” stuff, which is the title of the active window + its menu.

To sum up:

Does not come with:

  • Global Menu applet
  • Active Window Control applet

Does come with:

  • Window Title applet
  • Window AppMenu applet

Hope that helps.

Oof! My bad for getting those mixed up! That does help me for sure. Thanks for clearing that up @FGD . :+1:

Hey no problem man!
Don't worry a bit, I always mix up Global Menu and Window AppMenu, so much that I never really understood the differences between the 2. loll I never searched to answer that question though, cuz both work on my machine so I have no preference or biased towards one or another.

Yeah it's always confused me, lol. I was test driving a new Arco Linux Plasma distro the other day on my test machine, and tried putting the Plasma Windows AppMenu widget on the top bar, and it was VERY spotty on whether it would show up or not for the active window on the same screen. Since I built the install myself, I'm sure I missed an optional dependency or something. Good thing I main Garuda and that's already tested and baked in! Haha

We are currently working towards releasing that new iso, there are still a few steps left on our release checklist - rest assured it’ll release as soon as we are done  :stuck_out_tongue:

I think differences are mostly how much of it can actually be configured, for me there are a few options which make window appmenu a better choice

Top bar can’t be dragged to move windows anymore

Has anyone tested this new no-Latte world with DaVinci Resolve yet? A big issue I had DaVinci opening up in full screen mode was not being able to drag when I set it into windowed mode. I discovered I could get around this issue by using the top bar to drag the window. Wonder what, if any, solution exists for programs that do that odd behaviour?

Regular windows can usually be dragged by holding the meta button while doing so - might work for this too?

O! Yes, that works thanks.

yes that makes perfect sense since it seems the 2 applets I mentioned are old and no longer maintained.

does this - GitHub - psifidotos/applet-window-buttons: Plasma 5 applet in order to show window buttons in your panels - also need to be used? Its by same team.

Window Buttons applet is part of Garuda. But just like Latte, it has issues with kde-git (next plasma version to come). Dragonfire here did open up an issue on github but since it's the same guy as Latte we are not expecting any return. This applet may also well stop working in Plasma 5.27.

On the other end, if you use Active Window Control applet, after some super quick tests it seems to be somewhat of a workaround/"replacementish" of Window Buttons applet. I have no idea if Garuda is looking into it at the moment.

What else can we expect in new iso? WIll it wait fot Plasma 5.27 which is due on Feb 14?

It will be published when it's ready, simple as that.
The questions to the developers, only keep them from focusing on the essentials.

I had prepared something earlier

You know, I just had a thought, what about Plank? It's an old one, but a solid dock and Elementary OS still uses it so it'd seem like it's pretty stable. It's no Latte, but it's a dock. Just throwing out some ideas. :slightly_smiling_face:

Plank supports only Xorg so Wayland users will have to use something else. But the same thing applies for Latte as well due to this bug...

Ah bummer. Dock choices are gettin' slim for Plasma.

I am using Plasma panels for a while. They don't look as nice as Latte indeed but retain most of the functionality. I just miss being able to drag windows from the top bar.

Agreed. Used that functionality constantly.
