HP EliteBook 1050 G1 Nvidia Adventures and overall help needed

Hi Garudians,
I've been running for around 3 months Garuda KDE Flavor and after migrating from some KDE Neon I would like to say I'm very impressed by the distro!

At the very same start with Garuda I started to experience problems with my setup which is as following:
Laptop HP EliteBook 1050 G1 + ThunderBold Docking station
Nvidia 1050 GTX Max-Q

When I first install the distro I found the hard way that I had to choose non prop. drivers for initial installation so I did a re-install and was able to install.
After I logged in I realize that whatever of Driver Combination I try in Hardware Configuration my Nvidia card won't initialize.
So after some digging I did the following:
git clone GitHub - Frogging-Family/nvidia-all: Nvidia driver latest to 396 series AIO installer
cd nvidia-all
makepkg -si
And from the All in One installer I installed the experimental Vulcan Dev Nvidia drivers.
For some reason that's is the only drivers that are working .
I found about this today when I installed the latest kernel and seems with it the Nvidia Drivers changed, or updated so I was again after a reboot only on my Laptop screen, with Intel drivers.
I re-downloaded the above solution and ran it, tried the other options but seems that only the Dev drivers are working with my current setup:

I am noticing also that whenever I try to watch a 60 fps video on you tube .comthe system start to lag brutally and becomes very unresponsive.
I am also using Nvidia Prime selector and trying both Hybrid and Nvidia modes with nearly the same results.

Could you share some thoughts about my case.
Besides that I'm finding that compositor is also lagging a bit I am even turning it off from time to time, the config I use is as following:

I tried some combinations but still seems for me that the performance should be much better.
If it is of any importance I am using an external 24 `` monitor through the docking station and all other peripherals like Lan, Mouse and keyboard, and a Bluetooth dongle for headphones are working just fine.

I think this is the actual issue that you should fix, rather than using a third-party driver installation tool that will conflict with the Garuda tooling.

Iโ€™d recommend you restore a snapshot from before you started messing around with this โ€œAll in One installerโ€ and open a thread for the underlying issue you wanted to fix rather than for the problem you created.

This snapshot should be 3-4 month old, not sure at all if it exists, and if it does won't be a bit devastating restoring it ?

In which case, it will be worth reinstalling when the upcoming Hawk Eagle is released.

Is there anything else I can do?
The upcomming Hawk Eagle is something in the unknown future, and I really want to fix my present situation.

Do you think it is worth trying cleaning the driver I currently have installed from this AIO installer and try the Garuda drivers that are being shiped and installed with Hardware Manager - Auto Install Proprietary driver?

It depends on your demands.
If you canโ€™t wait a couple of days, do it.

Couple of days sounds great

Hello again,

So the new Garuda is here, so I updated to it all good.
After updating, I have uninstalled via the package manager and Hardware configuration the existing Nvidia drivers and installed the Prop. drivers.
At first there was a conflict with some left overs of the old nvidia drivers but after removing them they installed and showed as they should.

I rebooted and the old situation is here again I am unable to use the nvidia card the system defaults to the Intel GPU. Tried both prime-render offload and dkms driver same result.
Where should I start looking at, from other topics I read that maybe it's a good idea to try different Kernels in order to mitigate issues with the GPU, especially Nvidia.
Could you please give me an advice where to start looking for errors and is it a good idea to try different Kernels ?

Thank you!

This is the start:

bash -c 'for Xlog in $(ls /var/log/Xorg.?.log); do echo -e "\n" $Xlog ; grep -E "(EE)|(WW)|failed|Time" $Xlog ; done'

Depending on the results, we may look for more.

Update your system and reboot.
Some nvidia packages are a little older.
If in the update process there is no kernel recreation, run mkinitcpio -P

sudo pacman -Syu
sudo mkinitcpio -P

After reboot, post

journalctl -b -p3 --no-pager --no-hostname

and this (full Xorg log) at https://bin.garudalinux.org/

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Ok,
I updated and ran the mkinitpcio -P
After I rebooted I am using Optimus Manager QT to switch between nvidia and Intel GPUs so when I click the nvidia I get this message:

Posting the rest of the requested using the intel GPU:
journalctl -b -p3 --no-pager --no-hostname

journalctl -b -p3 --no-pager --no-hostname

The system seems awkward. What how exactly have you done โ€œupdatingโ€ etc.?

Your nvidia card is not that new, so it sounds odd to need experimental drivers.

What is awkward:

  • inxi shows you have nvidia card
  • journalctl and Xorg log, say you donโ€™t have one.

That can be achieved if you use acpi_call to disable it, or BIOS. But still it doesnโ€™t make (technical) sense.

Either explain how you managed to do this miracle, or reinstall your system with the newly published ISOs.

Messing with system configuration without knowing what you are doing is a recipe for such disastersโ€ฆ :man_shrugging:

Unless there is a bug somewhereโ€ฆ but I canโ€™t imagine where, at the momentโ€ฆ

If you donโ€™t reinstall, after this action, I consider the system unsupported from Garuda humans. Maybe from another planet you can get helpโ€ฆ :slightly_smiling_face:

Yep Ok just wanted to try everything possible before doing the painful reinstall, but sure thing will do a re-install and will report back.

Use last working snapshot, thatโ€™s why Garuda uses Btrfs and timeshift-autosnap.

In the latest working snapshot I am using those funky drivers (since they were the only one working) so I will be back at post 1 in the thread.

Hi sudoman,

You installed Frogging-Family nvidia ,but 390 and lower branches are not supported
for Pascal family GPU-s.

Honestly, I don't know what are the benefits of using Hybride-Graphics with optimus-manager and switching between the graphics cards. Maybe less battery usage. You can try this.
I would just use nvidia-390xx-dkms .

Please, don't advise others when you are not sure that you are correct.

NVIDIA GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile]

Pascal are compatible to latest nvidia AFAIK.
3rd party providers (Frogging-Family) are not bound to Arch/Garuda.

Always seek advice from Archwiki.

Yap, you're right.
I did another search on nvidia, but this time I searched for all nvidia drivers, instead of geforce drivers and this time it's says 460.56 is the latest for GF 10' series.
But someone also mentioned here that nothing else except 390 driver works with this card.
So listen to @petsam install the latest driver.
Than if it's not working try optimus-manager or 390xx.
