I noticed after I updated my system that I was not able to log into root folders using Thunar. Then I noticed after deleting files on my external hard drives, the files would not show up in the trash so I can clear it out and recover my hard drive space. At this point, I reboot my computer a few times. However, when I log in, I get this for an error when I open up the file manager:

I lost my background, can’t access any files. I do not know how to fix this.

Any ideas? I could use some help please

hmm that doesn’t seem good indeed.

not able to log into root folders using thunar

What do you mean by that?
Do you mean you cannot open any root owned directories?

can’t access any files

which files? Only on the seagate drives? Seagate HDDs (especially the low to medium capacity drives like yours) are known for being incredibly unreliable and shitty, so if you cannot access your seagate drives then I’d not discard the idea of them having simply died (two of them at once would be unlikely though)

What about a sudo btrfs check --force /dev/dm-0? Does that show any errors?

Could you share the boot log? journalctl -x | tb?
Also the kernel log would probably be sensible: journalctl -k | tb

Have you booted a snapshot to check if the issue also occurs there? Have you tried a different kernel (in your case zen for example)

I hope you have some backups at hand just in case

When you right click on any folder, you get options “Open THUNAR as Root”, it would ask for my password, then it just simply wouldn’t open

Exactly as I stated, I don’t know how else to describe it to you

Litterly any of them

My hard drives all have VeraCrypt on them, they log into them just fine. The file manager wont open to view the files. All the programs can see the files just fine, its just Thunar wont display anything

without the question mark

same here, and again, both sets of logs please

And have you tried booting into a pre-upgrade snapshot yet?

I don’t actually know how to do that

xfdesktop[3883]: segfault
Thunar[4150]: segfault

mkdir: cannot create directory ‘/home/rdpfenris’: Permission denied
Gkm: couldn't write to file: /home/rdpfenris/.local/share/keyrings/login.keyring: No such file or directory

Very weird. One thing I’d try is reinstalling glib2 since the segfaulting part is libgobject-2.0.so.0.8000.0 and that is part of glib.

Also what does ls -la /home show?
What about mount | grep home?

yeah this has me really confused. Have you tried booting a pre-upgrade snapshot yet?

At this point I’d just try to reboot and see if that glib reinstallation fixed it. If that won’t have fixed it try a full system upgrade.

Like I said, I don’t know how to do that

There already is a full system upgrade done to it

Then just try a reboot and see if it works

my bad
In the grub menu select “Snapshots” and read the sidebar to find the one from before the system upgade. Press enter and see if everything works. If it does (it really should since all your filesystems are in good condition and everything seems alright), I’d recommend to just restore when prompted to do so.

Read garuda-wiki, restore a snapshot.

I rebooted after installing the package you suggested, and nothing happened. So I rolled back to the last possible image, and I get this…

It’s screwed and its hung here

I rebooted to a normal boot, and its stuck here as well

It looks like I may have lost the files to :sob:

that certainly doesn’t look good. But! This is just the shutdown procedure, so chances are everything works when you boot it now

Look, its stuck like this, this is not the shutdown…this is the boot up

Since you added the image: So is it luks corruption then? Might be: Boot error and can't access LUKS Encrypted Fedora 37 drive (potentially corrupted OS drive) - Fedora Discussion
Try to wait a little longer and see if anything happens

Well it booted back into Garuda, still has the same desktop and Thunar problems

you’re a lucky man. So we got luks issues then maybe. You should definitely start making some backups now that your system is booted. If everything else fails then do it in the terminal.
Anyway, I’d be just very interested what took the system so long. Could you just run journalctl -x | tb and journalctl -k | tb again?

Here you go…

 ╭─fenris@fenris in ~ took 9ms
 ╰─λ journalctl -x | tb

 ╭─fenris@fenris in ~ took 6s
[[⚡]|[]] =>  ╰─λ journalctl -k | tb

 ╭─fenris@fenris in ~ took 6s
 ╰─λ

Now I need to figure out how to copy /home/fenris/Dropbox to /mnt/veracrypt1 then if I have to blow it all way, I will be reasonably ok

different idea. What if you try to reinstall thunar and xfce?
then log out and back in

I have absolutely no idea how to do that
