What Kernel are you running and why?

So i’ve been running Kernel zen1-1-zen for some time now. Mostly because of some points written here List of benefits that Zen offers · Issue #30 · zen-kernel/zen-kernel · GitHub
While not having specific issues, some crashes/slowdowns and hangs are happening here and there and i like to try stuff.

However, since there are numerous AMD specific kernels out there, is there some good round-up or maybe even benchmarks for Zen 3? Do they even “do something”? (i mean, they exist, so they should?)

I couldn’t find much on Phoronix that’s “fresh” enough to be viable (there’s an article from 2020 about Zen1 optimizations)…anyone else having a resource?

iam running the cachyos-bore because i have a slight increase in performance or it might just be placebo for others

I was trying many kernels earlier , like xmonad, LTS, hardened , tkg , cachyOS kernels .

But now I don’t care too much, I have bocome lazy  . I just keep on with whatever I got by default , and I don’t think of any other , if it is working properly :upside_down_face:

I have the following installed:
znveer3 - default
zen
lts - for a safe boot option just in case

not even sure if these are the best options

noooo the numbers are high in zen now i must change to zen for my autistic ahh

Okay, maybe is should have phrased that differently and also got the exact packet names in

linux-zen
linux-amd-znver3
linux-amd-znver2

Zen Kernel is a fork of Linux that applies out-of-tree features, early backports, and fixes, that impact desktop usage of Linux. Many of the features that change system behavior are hidden behind CONFIG_ZEN_INTERACTIVE, while many others are always available or configurable (such as CONFIG_MUQSS), for custom builds and distributions of Zen Kernel.

So “zen” in this case is the “buddhist zen”

However, as i understand, the linux-amd versions have specific tweaks for the AMD Zen CPUs. I had issues on my AMD Framework and switching to the AMD Variant resolved those.

And i’m just wondering if the other AMD-Znver Kernels “do something”

Edit: Looking at the AUR for the specific Kernels, i’m now not even sure there are differences anymore…

Source for the amd-znver2:

Edit2: At least on my Framework a quick check still results in p-state issues with the zen1…i can’t get it below 10 Watts on idle, with the linux-amd i get 6-7 Watts consumption on idle

I am not smart enough in that area, I believe garuda-team is, so I will just roll with their choice.

I hear ya! I like to be picky, but in this case I can’t be bothered (partly because I’m not knowledgable enough on the subject).

I used to be picky in most of the things, from kernels to terminal emulators , the softwares and also was tweaking a lot of things , to get the best !!

But , slowly I am now getting more like "I want to work through my computer , not on my computer "

Quite recently I decided to jailbreak my PS Vita in order to get the most out of it. It was quite a challenge at times, but the community is great and a lot of fine tools and tweaks are already available. At some point I arrived at that same conclusion, though: When will I finally start enjoying the fruits of this labor, instead of trying to perfect it?

I am running currently on a 9800X3D and having the default kernel that comes with Garuda e.g currently 6.12.7-zen1-1-zen.

Additional to this I have as well LTS installed just in case I F**** something up or BT again has a regression for some reason

Overall I didn’t try any other kernel. If something crashes like a game its usually the game issue not a kernel issue. Thus as other pointed I try just to enjoy my new PC and gaming on Linux rather than go bonkers and tune and test everything like crazy.

I do already a lot of tuning for Network, my Infra and its performance as I as my colleagues in works said to me " am building a datacenter in my flat".

I use Zen and ITS…why? I have no clue, Zen works till VMware Worstation gives me trouble, then I switch to ITS and everything works till the next update. In truth, I have absolutely no clue what so ever what these Kernals do or why I even want one to tell you the truth :sunglasses:

I will share everyone a secret…and I have been working Linux for almost a decade now, and I still don’t even know what kernal does

Wasn’t there a really long topic with this title last year? With it asking for no terminal screenshots.

Needless to say just running normal cachy.
Currently: 6.12.6-cachyos (64-bit)

If i wasn’t running Garuda nixos subsystem I would have a lts.

Though I’m using cachy only because its updates quick an is close to mainline with out me having to run mainline. I can’t tell a performance difference an I’ve tried em all.
