The screen stuck at "loading initial ramdisk" after update

Hey there, I installed garuda, after installation everything is good and working fine. But after "Garuda Setup Assistant" does the update, when restarting, the screen stuck at "loading initial ramdisk". I can't get into text mode with ctrl+alt+f2. In other threads, it was written that this may be due to proprietary Nvidia drivers and I also tried to skip installing them when "Garuda Setup Assistant" suggested it. But it didn't work. In any case, after the "garuda-update" command, when trying to reboot, the screen hung at the place "loading initial ramdisk". By the way, after executing "garuda-update" it doesn't give any errors. As advised on other topics, I turned off splash in the "Garuda Boot Option", I tried to install plymouth, it installs without errors, but there is still no effect.

Also, another observation is that after the "garuda-update" command, the sound disappears in the system, the output device is no longer displayed in the settings, the volume on the buttons is no longer adjustable.

I would suggest not using plymouth, as that has been causing issues for people (and is why the team removed it).

There has been recent reports after updating that you really need to be sure the BIOS setting is set for AHCI mode. Might be your issue too?

There is no setting in my BIOS that allows me to switch to AHCI. Is it possible to make this work without AHCI mode?

If your BIOS looks like this: HP Desktop PCs - BIOS Setup Utility information and menu options | HP® Customer Support, then be sure to look under "storage options".

My BIOS looks like the photos below. I have already tried many times to find ways to switch to AHCI and nothing worked for me.

No worries, it looks like firmware RAID is not enabled which is the important thing.

Can you explain at what point the garuda-inxi command was run? I am guessing it was run before you completed the update routine, since the splash kernel parameter is still in use, but it also shows the system is in a partially upgraded state which can cause major problems.

Try bringing your system fully up to date and install the LTS kernel.

garuda-update linux-lts linux-lts-headers

Paste the terminal output right into the thread so we can see what is happening. You can boot with the LTS kernel by selecting it from the advanced boot options in the Grub menu.

You are right, garuda-inxi was called before the upgrade.

I can’t give the entire terminal output here because there’s a 32,000 character limit. But here are some snippets of the output:

System updated! 🐧

Update notices:
The "splash" (Plymouth) kernel parameter was removed from your GRUB configuration automatically to ensure system stability. Plymouth may be enabled manually again, but it is strongly recommended to keep plymouth disabled.
The GRUB bootloader at /EFI/Garuda has been updated/reinstalled using 'grub-install'. If this looks correct, no further action has to be taken.

I ran the command and booted up with the LTS kernel selection. And the booting continued, but then again stuck with a completely blank black screen.

That looks fine to me.

Can you confirm you are not able to get to a TTY from the screen you are stuck loading initial ramdisk with Ctrl+Alt+F2 or F3?

Yes, I can't access the TTY. But after I ran the command you suggested and when booting from the LTS kernel, the screen no longer stops at loading the initial ramdisk.
Now the text "loading initial ramdisk" disappears and it looks like just a completely black screen with no text at all.

Let's back up to the BIOS menu. What options are presented in these two menus?

What options are in this menu?

When I click on what you show in the second photo, the BIOS jumps to what you show in the first photo. If I select one of the disks then the BIOS shows information about it (photo below). And there are no options to configure.

Does your laptop have an advanced bios ? If so have you tried gaining access to it

I have been looking for information on the Internet for several months about the existence of advanced bios and how to unlock it. And nothing worked.

Did you try this one? How to access advanced system settings in BIOS - HP Support Community - 8317504

“If you really need to access the Advanced tab in the BIOS then Boot up your computer and then press the F10 key to get into BIOS. Then quickly press the A key to show the Advanced settings. In the BIOS, press Fn+Tab 3 times.”

It seems like a long shot; from what I am reading HP does not expose this option anymore except for certain business models where perhaps a different support contract has been negotiated.

HPs are basically the most frustrating computers in the world. The BIOS menu is more of an interactive spec sheet than an actual menu with options and settings. Their support threads are maddening to read through. Check out this one, where the guy wants to overclock his CPU and the response from HP support was to try resetting the BIOS to factory defaults–other than that, the BIOS “may not have options for modifications as it might damage the product might get damaged [sic] if customers change options in it.” https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/advanced-settings-in-bios-is-hidden/td-p/6598370

The commenters have grown somewhat impassioned on this one:

“This is really lame. It’s MY product. I paid for it. If I want to change advanced settings to my liking I should be able to do it. If it damages the system, so be it, its my fault and no one elses. I have been trying to figure out how to change advance memory settings in my H8-1414 but the “BIOS” that was included is nothing more than a system report and is totally USELESS.”

“Totally agree. I bought new gaming laptop without OS, and I have same issue, I absolutely don’t know but much much horrible. Maybe somehow you can do it from RWEverything. Changing HEX codes, i mean programming/reflashing your BIOS/CPU Microcodes, but it’s way too risky! you need to know where and how… Still i have same locked bios and still couldn’t found solution, and having this inhumanly working “new gaming” laptop…”

“I regreat of every single hp hardware i ever had. They are all a piece of junk once you have ANY real support and HP makes your hardware fail intensionally and make sure you cant fix it on your own. Shame on us that spent money on this… mabe next time we learn the lesson and go to a Dell or Asus anf get rid of this BS!”

Anyway, I can’t help but think this inability to change the controller settings is the crux of the issue. Although your BIOS menu reports the disk status is “non-RAID”, I noticed this output in your garuda-inxi:

I think the controller is in RAID mode, but it isn’t announced as such because who cares? :man_shrugging: The user can’t change it anway.

Here’s a thread where “Expert” Paul_Tikkanen announces there is no way to enable AHCI mode: Solved: How to enable AHCI for HP ENVY TouchSmart m6-k015dx Sleekboo... - HP Support Community - 3307909

“Because your notebook is a consumer notebook there is no way to change the BIOS setting to AHCI.”

In another support thread, the same guy (Paul_Tikkanen) tells a customer this:

"There is nothing you can do as far as changing drive controller settings.

You can find many posts where other folks are having the same issue.

https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Monitors-and-Memory/970-EVO-not-compatible-with-Magician-5-2/td-…"

Maddeningly, the post he links to (to illustrate “other folks are having the same issue”) is solved, and the solution was to switch from RAID to AHCI mode. :man_facepalming:

"If your bios is set to “raid on” then you must change it to “AHCI” in order to install latest version of samsung firmware and get samsung magician to recognize your drive. If you just change the values in your bios, you will get blue screen of death; you need to do it this way:

https://triplescomputers.com/blog/uncategorized/solution-switch-windows-10-from-raidide-to-ahci-oper…"

"In my case the following worked:

  1. Switching from RAID to AHCI mode according to your instructions

  2. Installing NVME driver from Samsung website"

All that to say: there might be nothing for it, since HP has decided it’s best if you are not able to adjust the settings they picked out when they installed Windows 10 on the device.

I will say, it seems that there is a recent change where devices that seem to have been running fine without AHCI mode explicitly enabled suddenly cannot find the disk any longer. The only thing I can think of is a change in the kernel. You can try your luck installing other kernels, and see if something is out there that will still work with your configuration.

You can learn about some kernels you can try here: Kernel - ArchWiki. Don’t forget to install the headers as well, and pay close attention to the terminal output when the DKMS modules are added to make sure the Nvidia card will work, etc.

With the Chaotic-AUR, a lot of kernels can be installed through Pacman; maybe start with some of these and see if you get lucky:

linux-cachyos linux-cachyos-headers
linux-cachyos-bore linux-cachyos-bore-headers
linux-clear linux-clear-headers
linux-drm-next-git linux-drm-next-headers-git
linux-drm-tip-git linux-drm-tip-headers-git
linux-hardened linux-hardened-headers
linux-lqx linux-lqx-headers
linux-lts-tkg-bmq linux-lts-tkg-bmq-headers
linux-lts-tkg-cfs linux-lts-tkg-cfs-headers
linux-mainline linux-mainline-headers
linux-xanmod linux-xanmod-headers
linux-xanmod-lts linux-xanmod-lts-headers

Good luck @just_a_user, sorry I was not able to be more helpful.

Yes, I’ve tried. This does not work.

I also understood this. I will never deal with them again. But now I have no other choice and I need to make it work.

Okay, I’ll try to install these kernels. This will take some time. I’ll write when I try each.

Thank you very much, I am grateful for any support.

I have tried all these kernels. Unfortunately, they all give the same thing when loading. It’s either “loading initial ramdisk” or it loads further, but still stops at a black screen.

I can also say that with the xanmod and xanmod-lts kernels, the HP logo was displayed for a few seconds. Then there was also a black screen.

I have found so far the only option to continue working. This is editing the /etc/pacman.conf file to ignore kernel updates, with the following lines:

IgnorePkg = linux-zen linux-zen-headers

I understand that this is bad and does not solve the problem. But this is working fine now. The system boots normally. All other updates also work fine.

Sames issue here, but installing the LTS Kernel seemed to fix my issue. Something seems amiss with the new Kernel. LTS has me up and running at moment, but broke my GPU passthrough somehow. Off to troubleshoot that issue now ;-).
