Where’s the best place to find solutions on getting games working with STEAM on Garuda?
According to this video it should all work fine with a few settings adjusted. Video Tutorial
I wanted to buy and install Fallout 3 GOTY, but before doing so, I installed and tried Fallout Shelter (because it was free). This worked straigh out of the box, so to speak).
So I bought Fallout 3 GOTY and it was added to my library.
I downloaded the xlive.dll to the fallout folder.
After installing I ensured that the latest Proton available was selected in STEAM settings.
And selected v9.0-3.
On installing I received a Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 x64 Setup error / warning "You must use “Turn Windows features on or off” in the control panel to install or configure Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 x64. I clicked OK and moved onto Processing Vulkan Shaders.
Processing Vulkan Shaders completed and I had to re-launch the game. Then the game launcher pops up then disappears straight away and the Play button goes green again. I went back into compatibility and changed it from Proton 9.0.3 to 8.0.5. Now when I hit play it started downloading something again. Now the Microsoft.NET Framework error has appeared again. I clicked OK and it is continuing to install. And the same problem - launcher appears and then disappears. Now trying Proton Experimental. Went back to Proton 3.7-8 (the lowest available) now I have got the game launcher open and asking to check video hardware. The game starts up and now works, but the video is so laggy, even moving the mouse pointer around is extremely difficult. So any ideas what I can do to get this working and playable?
last time I remember I ran Fallout 3 using steam compatibility and it ran fine without me doing anything. did you try running the game before adding that xlive.dll file?
No I did not try running it without the xlive.dll, could rename the file and try again?
When you say STEAM compatability, is that the setting found in compatibility where you set Enable Steam Play for all other titles? https://gcore.com/learning/how-to-install-proton-on-linux/
yes enable steam play for all other titles is all I needed. not sure if renaming it would work as I do not know how it is called as the system might just run any .dll file or similar so just move it back to your downloads folder or elsewhere.
So searching and finding this thread: https://forum.garudalinux.org/t/how-do-i-install-nvidia-drivers/30919
I reinstalled the nvidia drivers but this time used the second command:
sudo pacman -S garuda-nvidia-prime-config
And this time I now have Fallout 3 GOTY running, played the first couple of minutes - watching the intro videos - so success I guess.
I’ll look out for a more up to date Gfx Card - any recommendations?
if you are going going to be using Linux AMD is much less of a headache but soon™ Nvidea card support should have less issues. other than that just check youtubers or bloggers that do their own testing for a graphics card price to performance rating in general or for a particular game you might play a lot.
try what is listed there from users, could also try the glorious-eggroll proton-version which can be found in garuda games installer (or pacman)
if you wanna stick to linux, don’t use Nvidia. (also don’t use broadcom. Asshole-companies the both of them)
Also post your garuda-inxi when asking for help (as is stated as soon as you start opening up a thread). It is not clear what hardware you use. It must be very old if it cannot run Fallout 3 sufficiently. Which makes me think that it might not be the hardware, but no way to be certain.
When attempting to launch using Proton 8.0 or newer, the game would fail to launch on a black screen with an error stating something about ‘turning Windows features on/off’.
Had to launch the game with an older Proton version 3.16-9 so that Direct X would install properly. Then, switched to Proton version 6.3-8. Game runs perfectly now after fixing the mouse acceleration issue. To Fix Mouse Acceleration:
Edit the file FALLOUT.INI located in prefix game’s folder (…/22370/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/Fallout3/).
In [Controls] section, add: fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0 fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0 fForegroundMouseBase=0 fForegroundMouseMult=0

Copied xlive.dll to …/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/22370/pfx/drive_c/windows/syswow64. Otherwise the game does not start after Launcher. Changed / added two parameters for more stability to …/SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/22370/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/My Games/Fallout3:
