Steam Games Crash After Latest System Update

My games had been working fine, up until I updated the system a couple of days ago. They’ll run for a few minutes, and then crash out. I’ve tried uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling Steam and Wine, but it hasn’t worked. I’m thinking something might be broken, but I’m at a loss for what and how to fix it without going nuclear.

Log file of the last game I tested, and then crashed.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Reboot and try it again.

I reboot after every update I make, regardless if it affects system files or not. When this problem first happened, I did a reboot just to see if that’s what was needed, but the problem persisted.

Long shot but have you tried running them in x11 instead of wayland

I have not, but I’ll give it a try.

Okay. Try having a look at the system log with journalctl, see if it gives you more info.

You could use “journalctl -f” to follow the end of the log while you launch a game and see what’s happening when the game crashes.

If you’re not seeing much, use sudo. If you want to scroll through the current log from the end “sudo journalctl -xe” will drop you at the end of the log, you can scroll with the page up/dn or arrow keys.

Tried running in X11; different characters, but same story.

Made sure to capture the log. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FcpwA1WGQD2-w8Bf32mQ5zztPlIlftG2/view?usp=sharing

They caught my eye, but I don’t really know what they mean (if anything), let alone what they would point to that was broken as compared to just a few days ago.

try downgrading the kernel. it worked for me.

Seems like enabling resizable bar also fixes it

Well, the problems keep mounting, because I can’t even get into the BIOS.

I really hope I don’t need new hardware.

I’ve done a bit of digging, and I’ve decided to go the nuclear option, for multiple reasons.

There’s a lot that I don’t think I’ve set up properly, and with a fresh install, if problems come back, then it’s a telltale sign that I’ll have to invest in at least a new motherboard and possibly a new power supply. I really don’t want to, but this is the easiest way to tell if I’ll have to rip off that band-aid.

Thank you all for your help.

I hope your luck turns around and that works out.

Were you eventually able to get into BIOS?

I kept rebooting every so often and power cycling. The POST screen popped up once, and I was so caught up that I forgot to hit the hotkey. Luckily, I have the next three days off, so I’ll be working on this in between other chores and engagements. So far, though… it’s touch and go. It may be a deeper problem in my system. Time will tell, I guess. :man_shrugging:

I don’t think you need to waste that much time
systemctl reboot --firmware-setup

I wanted to chime in and say I’ve been having the same issues. Most games will open to a black screen and immediately close, others will cause all kinds of fun and crazy visual/graphical errors. Yesterday and the day before I was getting a C++ wine error but that seems to have gone after a wine + wine mono update in the past 24 hours, but that only slightly fixed my issues. (nvm lmao) A couple games seem to work now but most are still very much bricked. I’ve tried a whole host of fixes with effectively no luck whatsoever. (Many proton(ge) versions, many program/package reinstalls and variant/git versions, countless reboots (some due to soft locks), various steam commands, konsole troubleshooting, cache cleaning, kernel versions, bunch of things I don’t remember tbh)

I was planning on making a post here today or tomorrow but you beat me to it. If you end up finding anything else out with this please let me know. I just got an old laptop (2011-2012) that I put Garuda on today, I’ll see if any of this is replicateable over there. KDE 6 seemed to be a dawn of dark times for me in general, though, a ton of things have been slowly breaking or losing stability since. I’ve been pretty much exclusively using my Deck for a few days now since 90% of the games I’ve tried to play have resulted in system soft locks, crashes on game launch, kde/driver crashes, and a bunch of fun colors manifesting in various ways.

Edit: the Wine issue mentioned is the same one in the forum link posted by dawe
Can’t personally use resizeable bar, to my knowledge it’s intel 10th gen+ and I’m on 8

Actually same here, last update bricked 60-70% of the games I play and I also get an immediately blackscreen and crash with various wine errors. This was not an issue before.

EDIT: Enabling resizable seems to have fixed the issue. I had to enable 4g decoding on my motherboard before the option to enable resizable bar appeared.

I use Lutris and most of my games stopped working. What I have found is if I turn off Vulkan in Lutris some of the games run, like Skyrim, Fallout 4, etc. There might be something going on with Vulkan and shaders. There are posts on reddit that also suggest kernel 6.89 is causing this as well. I haven’t tried installing a previous kernel and testing yet. It is strange.

Update: I used the LTS kernel; 6.6.30-2 LTS and my game ran fine, so it is definitely a kernel issue. It also appears they have a possible fix in the testing branch??

Update Final: Seems the culprit was Glibc which was updated a few hours ago. Fixed the issue for me.

I am also having the same issue. I also changed the kernel to LTS per this thread’s suggestion, games seem to work, at least for now?

If anyone knows what the actual fix is or what the root cause is let me know. I really need my Steam games to be stable here in a couple of weeks and would like to switch back to Zen if it gets fixed, if that is indeed the issue.

Update: actually, some games still don’t work. Overwatch 2 no longer works, Baulder’s Gate 3 doesn’t work unless you use DirectX 11, etc. Keep in mind I am a complete noob, but it seems like it might be Vulkan related? Or something with AMD GPUs?

I don’t know, here is my specs for now, just in case that helps anyone. Keep in mind I switched to LTS just today.

At least for me, it has to do with certain kernels and them somehow not working unless resizable BAR is on in the BIOS settings (and “Above 4G decoding”, which under certain kind of BIOS, this setting auto-enables if you enable resizable BAR. This setting varies in name however).
Even in the LTS kernel it was giving me issues until I changed those BIOS settings. :man_shrugging:

Well… anyways, as stated before there should be a fix in the works (looks like the issue is closed now).
