ROG laptop help

Hello Garudians,

I have spent a day trying to enable an external monitor on a new ROG laptop.... i need some help.

I can see the monitor, but i cant get anything to display.

In system settings the monitor is visible.

I found a similar thread here and I think I could have success following that - but I cannot create a new file in the Xorg.conf.d folder -its greyed out

This is the output of xrandr

I would appreciate any hints as to the direction to take to solve this ...so would my wife hehehe thankyou!

Where is it greyed out?
You must be root to change things.

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

To edit files as root simply use sudo nano /path/to/filename

Or use dolphin, navigate to the desired folder, do a right click, chose “administrator actions → open in file manager”. Then do another right click and create a new text file with the needed name (if it is not already there). Right-click the new file, open it with kate, edit it to your needs and save.

Then close the root instances of dolphin and kate, just to be sure.

Garuda use micro, btw  , not nano.

Ups, sorry!
I am using nano for about a year now, and I forgot that it is not the default.

ohh man i feel so stupid,,, ofc i remember now....

Guys for clarity, my 2 garuda linux PC's , which was my first venture into Linux, were confiscated by Europol and National police in July and I have been without anything until now :frowning:

And all my Garuda knowledge seems to of evaporated . . . .

Thanks everyone for the quick hints, much love!, I will keep going and try to solve this !

This is how i usually did it on other installs, but that option, new file, in the right click menu of admin seems to be missing when looking via dolphin.

In the root instance of dolphin you don't need to go tho the admin submenu to create a new file. Just do a right-click and create a new file.

oh another doh moment - I wasn't in the right directory -

I was in etc/X11

mmm still greyed out option to create new , in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

Are you sure that you are running dolhin as root? It works for me:

ok, that activated memory

i need sound or visual to remember stuff

I remember changing this option on other Garuda installs, Dolphin is not set as root by default.

Changed Dolphin to open as root - still doenst work - still greyed out create new file....

Hm. Did you get this warning banner that it is dangerous to run dolphin as root? I am pretty sure that it will work if you run dolphin as root in the way that I described above. If it doesn't work then there may be another issue.

If it really doesn't work just try using a terminal editor. Run it with sudo.

As I have learned earlier this day Garuda uses micro as default editor in the terminal. So try sudo micro /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/filename

Or just create and edit the file in your home folder. Then open a terminal in your home folder and move it to the right place with sudo cp ./filename /path/to/folder/filename. Check if the file is in the destination. If it is, you can delete the file from your home folder.

So im trying to recreate this to show that its not working as it is for you.

Create file still greyed out.

Using spectacle to take a ss , is not possible with the context menu open - what program did you use to take the screen capture?

This is strange , when I open a SS from Spectacle its opens wine and then tries to display the SS in internet explorer...what the.....

You are on it!!

im getting somewhere

into the blank file now, this is great

thanks again!

I am using ksnip.

Yes, this is strange! But you can change this in the system settings.

So never used micro only nano till now, know none of the commands and help wasnt much help....

and cant save that file...

cannot save read only buffer

sudo pacman -S nano
Then use nano if it is better for you

As you can see, my brain is not functioning well at all ....
thankyou!

You're welcome!

Its ALIVE!

Thanks again for the help everyone.

Popped in that config that @petsam did in another thread with same issue and all is now working -time to test out some games !

Im sure my ocd will kick in and find something not performing as it should and I will be back soon

I am happy to read that! :+1:

It would be great if you would mark the thread that helped you most as a solution. Maybe it will help someone in the future. Who knows?
