Recent updates make GRUB erroneously probe own Garuda OS

Good day everyone!

After the recent updates, for some reason the OS-prober ends up finding the own main Garuda install, and proceeds to add it to the list as a different OS despite being - of course - already present. Fresh installs on 3 different PCs 2 weeks ago all worked as expected (finding Windows 10/11 and Kubuntu, and listing everything accordingly), but it seems like the (new?) “grub-install” messes things up; running grub-mkconfig doesn’t change the output, neither does running the update full fix from Rani, but reinstalling the OS from ground zero (and THEN applying the updates) seems to get rid of the erroneous entries.
The issue affected both an MSI Claw and a SFF desktop PC, both with multi-boot, both with the same Garuda install using the same .iso (Garuda Dr460nized Gaming, latest build as of March 22), both without any other Garuda OSs installed.
Screenshots and terminal outputs are relative to the SFF PC only, since I had to reinstall everything on the MSI Claw due to other unsolvable issues that arose in the meanwhile.

Changing names of boot entries and boot order

Hello… I have two versions of Garuda installed on different drives on the same desktop (Garuda Dragonized on /dev/nvme0n1 and Garuda Sway on /dev/nvme1n1) and so I have two entries named “Garuda” in the grub boot menu. I use the Dragonized version most often. It isn’t a very descriptive name, unfortunately, and it seems like since the Sway version is what I installed last, that’s always what boots, even if I change the boot order in the Garuda Boot Options app in the Dragonized installation. …

i had the issues to with dual boot (also dev isos) but actually installed all on a other ssd so i dont mess with dualboot and hijacking windoof anymore other problems.

Try adding

GRUB_OS_PROBER_SKIP_LIST=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

To your /etc/default/grub and then

sudo update-grub

Where xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx is the UUID of your btrfs system partition (check with

lsblk -f

@Duke187 I should have better specified that - on both the affected PCs - there is only one instance of Garuda installed; even more odd is the fact that, while the Claw has everything on a single SSD (Garuda & Win11), the SFF desktop has a dedicated SSD for every OS in it (one for Garuda, one for Win10, one for Kubuntu)… so despite being two very different setup, they both ended up showing the same anomalous behavior. Before someone asks, no, there have been no updates from Windows in the meanwhile (I didn’t even boot it up at all, before/during/after the issue).

@filo thank you very much for the suggestion, for it has fixed the erroneous probing!
The symptoms are now gone, but I still wonder what went wrong during the ‘new’ GRUB install; anyway, I have high hopes that nothing more will happen behind the scenes, during the next updates :'D

Difficult to say. Grub is really complicated in my opinion.
I strongly believe it’s not Garuda stuff, but something upstream, either in the Arch packaging of at the origin.
The same thing happened to me in the past years, maybe once or twice.
Recently it happened on a test VM (but not on the host…).
It’s not worth investigating, in my opinion.
I just noticed there were recently a few bugs closed in the Arch repo mentioning os-probe. Maybe they introduced something…
