Problems with my Razer RZ09-02705F76-R3F1

Hello !! For a while, I’ve been experiencing some annoying problems with my Razer Blade 15.

To begin, the original battery swelled, and at the time, I was running Windows. The second battery I was using was on Garuda Dragonized (gaming edition), and I had the same problem. I replaced the battery, and it lasted for one week.

So, my PC, without any battery, only runs on the AC charger. Everything was okay, but it started to shut down as if I had unplugged the charger every time the system had to perform a demanding task. There was no message, nothing, just a shutdown, and it would only start again after 5 minutes and a few presses on the power button. I thought it might be the charger ? Maybe it was the one that destroyed all the other batteries and kept crashing my system ?

I replaced the charger, and later, I performed a complete revision of my PC, like new thermal paste (Kryonaut one), complete fan cleaning, and checking every system component. Everything was okay !!

So, I underclocked the CPU, and it was more stable, but the problem persisted, this time less frequently, now in tasks that didn’t consume much power, like playing Garry’s Mod at 200FPS+ and no crash, but when changing the icon of Plasma via the settings, it would crash, but not every time I did it. I tested on the Linux kernel, Linux LTS kernel, Linux nitrous, Linux hardened, Linux xanmod LTS, Linux xanmod clang V3, Linux cachyos-bore, and the Linux mainline kernel.

And yeah, it was time to put in a new battery from iFixit, great !! The joy was short-lived, as the battery wouldn’t charge, oh, it would charge and stop charging every 5 seconds for 100ms at a glance. It’s like when the PC detects the battery, it wants only the battery, not the AC, even if it’s plugged in.

The battery seems okay, the ACPI command detects it, and so does the system, it shows the serial number, capacity, temperature, etc… But it doesn’t charge, and now the battery is at zero, so the PC doesn’t even turn on when it’s connected, so I can’t say if it’s the OS or the battery ?

I even tried multiple kernels but nothing. What’s strange is that even when the PC is turned off, the same problem occurs.

How do I know this ? Well, by the sound of the charger and the sound of the battery (I removed the back cover and plugged in the charger when the battery was installed, and kept my ear close, and I knew by the sound that it was the same problem, and at the same interval as the charger, for more precision, I tested with the new charger and the old one, same problem).

I’m starting to lose my mind, I don’t know what the problem is, I may suspect a bad ACPI table configuration, but I can’t test it, the battery is at zero %.

If anyone knows how to repair this mind-loosing issue, it would be really incredible

(this PC is for school, and an IA testing platform, image/text/sound model generation and editing/training, so without the complete power and the battery working, I can’t do what I’m supposed to do, for school and myself).

To addition, there’s no sound anymore. even the keyboard shorcut don’t work.
I know my description is not very clear, and sorry for that.

Thank you for your answers and have a great day !!

Here is the garuda-inxi output, I’ve reformatted it to be more readable :

Have you got a temperature problem with your CPU? Or did you overclock, or under clock your computer in the bios? These are the times i ran into the issues you describe here. It could also be that you CPU is packing up, i have heard sudden reboots are also a result of that.

New fans, or setting your motherboard back to default, usually fixes such issues fine.

Occasional paragraphs in the text improve readability immensely.
You should be aware that many potential helpers will not read such a text.

I underclocked it, not via the BIOS but via the ‘cpupower-gui’ interface. I’ve set a frequency range of 800MHz to a maximum of 3.02GHz, and set the governor to ‘balance power’. I don’t touch the BIOS for these settings.

So I don’t know if it’s overheat because the sensors don’t show a high temperature, like the average temperature while doing dkms building, or file managing, or basics task the max temp is 39°

And while playig garry’s mod with max graphics via the Life mod addons, the max CPU temp is 56° and for the GPU, 50. Before, it was 67° CPU 65° GPU while playing, and when i was on windows, it was even more high : 90° while playing for the CPU and 85° for the GPU, with an average temp of 57-60° and no shut down

Okay, noted!

Couple of comnents:

Test a new mouse to see if the one you are using now is faulty.

Install a different power manager such as TLP.

Your bios is quite old. You should update it if there is a newer version available.

Reset your bios to the factory default if there is no bios update available.

Do you have a live boot disk already burnt? If not, you should absolutely download a new install ISO, burn a new boot disk, and check if these issues persist in a live environment. This is of paramount importance if you expect to make progress with your issues, as we need to know if your problems originate from bad hardware or an install that is configured improperly. We need to know this as a baseline before a ton of time is wasted trying 100 different things when faulty hardware could be responsible for your problems.

You did not state the kernel versions you tested. Please test out at least 4 alternate kernels. Be sure the LTS kernel is one of those you test.

Hello, thank you for your answer. The kernels I have tried are: the Linux kernel, Linux LTS kernel, Linux Nitrous, Linux Hardened, Linux Xanmod LTS, Linux Xanmod Clang V3, Linux Cachyos-Bore, and the Linux-mainline kernel.

The Cachyos-Bore kernel seems to be the most stable, but the problem persists, both with another mouse and without a mouse. I installed TLD as you suggested, but the frequency range I set (800 MHz to 3.02 GHz) are not respected, as if the manager does nothing

There are a lot of posts on the Internet about this battery problem.

For example here or here and here.

If you use a search engine of your choice, you will find even more. I think it makes more sense to look for solutions there than to undervolt the computer. The other problems, such as those with the sound, could be caused by this.

EDIT:
Many laptops need both, battery and the AC adapter to handle peak loads. If the battery or AC adapter is missing, this will not work and the computer may slow down or shut down.

Well you certainly ran the gamut regarding the kernels, probably not much point in testing further kernels.

Some other things to try:

Test running in an X session rather than Wayland.

Switch to the free nvidia driver, or switch to your Intel graphics card for troubleshooting purposes.

Run a search of the repos for razer related software packages. There is a lot out there, maybe one of them might help.

Before it worked flawlessly, without any problems and without a battery (the PC ran for a while without a battery before all that), so i don’t know. And I’ve tested it in a live session, and the same problem - it shut down randomly but this time, without any demanding tasks. I think you are right : maybe the newer version of the kernel or the system requires even more power to run.

If you are running numerous devices on your USB bus, it might help to run everything through a powered USB hub rather than taxing your computer’s PSU.

Purchasing a universal power supply might help, but no one likes to waste money if it not needed. However, if you buy a PSU from somewhere with a good return policy you could at least test it out and return it if it doesn’t help. Although buying a universal model is a good investment, because if your current one dies you’ll at least have a spare. It’s also handy to have several power units if you move your laptop around your house regularly. The nice thing about buying a universal power supply is that if you buy a different make of computer in a few years you’ll know the power supply will work with it.

As I mentioned earlier, you should really check if a bios update is available. A person that I suggested updating their bios to a few days ago solved their power issue with a bios update. Updating the bios and testing alternate kernels solves far more issues on the forum than you would ever expect. Those should almost always be the first two things you do when troubleshooting random issues that pop up.

I do not believe that the kernel is responsible for this. It would be very unusual. And if it were, many more users would have this problem.

I agree with @tbg . An overload or even a fault in the power supply would be possible. However, you should definitely update the BIOS razer.com - Razer Blade 15 02705

I would replace the power supply first though, because if it is really the culprit and the computer shuts down during the BIOS update, all you will have left is a paperweight.

Don’t think it’s the USB devices, I’ve tried without any devices connected, but the same thing happens, even in the live USB.

And, as you say, updating the BIOS might be the solution, but there’s one problem: The updater is in .exe format, and I don’t think launching it in Wine would get it to work because the updater needs to detect the motherboard, which is not possible when launching it with Wine. Do you know how to launch it correctly so it can work ?

You can unzip the .exe. I do not know wether the containing BIOS file can be flashed under DOS with the appropriate tool. If so, it is not a trivial undertaking. If it were my device, I would try to dig in to be able to update it without Windows in the future, but that is not a matter of only 1-2 hours for not being a BIOS expert.

You will probably only be left with dual-boot, because it is easier and faster to accomplish.

I think I’ll just boot to Windows from a flash drive, update the BIOS via the live USB, this might work

Wouldn’t that also work with fwupd?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Flashing_BIOS_from_Linux#fwupd
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fwupd#

I’ve already tried, but it only updated the Thunderbolt service, not the system firmware, and the other services.

UPDATE : the windows solution don’t work, the windows setup doesn’t detect the drivers file, i want to install it on a external drive so i can boot into it and install the BIOS update, even if it is from 2019 and no more update has been published, still want to try. I have to find a solution to get this dumb windows working

Windows 11.iso from a stick created with Rufus should have the necessary drivers.

Doesn’t work either, i’ve tried wit rufus, the KDE iso writer, MultiWrite, Ventoy, and the media creation tool of windows. Even Tiny11 doesn’t work

Not good. You could remove the NVME and HDD as a test. Maybe it will be found if no other drive is present.

I read somewhere that it is possible to get a customized win.iso for the specific device via Razer support on the website if you persistently in ask for it.
