Off Topic Chit Chat - (Silliness factor 5)

Thank you, it took some time to get the details right, but it turned out good. That’s why I shared it in the first place, I thought somebody would like it and maybe use it themselves.

Dude, you don’t need to be so toxic and keep reinforcing the stereotype of the gatekeeper in Linux communities. You’re plain wrong and I explained why, just accept it and go on with your life…

Noted, but I understand from you and other admins/mods liking comments of this toxic individual, that in this discussion I was the persona non grata, even if I had all the rights on the image I created. So from now on I guess I’ll refrain from sharing anything anymore on this community, given the level of unjust scrutiny and negativity I get in return.

Wanna get into a namecalling contest, do you?

Well you, sir, are a thief.

P.S. I’m older than you. I know a lot more names to call…if you insist. But moderators might want to move it over to the funny side of the forum. It’s only detracting people from viewing and posting artwork–their own.

@VitoF

It's not about image rights, it's about your own artwork. If you change an existing image, it is still not your art.
If you had pointed it out directly, we could have saved all the off-topic crap here.

I will move it.

You are entitled to your opinion, but that does not mean you're right. If you make substantial changes to the original image, such as adding new elements, changing the colors, applying filters, or altering the composition (all things I have done), you may be able to create something that is unique and original enough to be considered your art. For the purposes of that thread, or my gitlab, or even legally, that image IS my artwork.

But I guess the more nuanced answer is that there is no definitive answer to whether image remixing is your art or not, as different people may have different opinions and criteria for what constitutes art.

The issue for me was being called a thief (now) / copyright infringer (before) etc.. on zero legal grounds, which is straight up libel, over some remix I shared for the only purpose of giving a better, more detailed, changed, with added elements, different proportions, different composition, different background, different style spin on a very common concept which is the pink Floyd album art with something else in the middle. Gatekeeping is the only term that comes to mind, given this response, other than ignorance.

I see you stand by this individual and I have nothing against this. You moderate your community as you see fit. I see no point in trying to explain myself any further (because I already did multiple times ) or disproving baseless opinions.

It's your work, but it's a remix with artwork that you didn't create.
That's all it's about.
Write remix or inspired by .., all fine.

All this outrage over @VitoF’s image seems like a tempest in a teacup to me. We’ve all seen the image before; an explanation that it is a derivative work was not necessary. No more so than when people riff on any other well-known meme on the internet.

He didn’t barge in claiming to have come up with the concept, or to have created the Arch Linux logo, or to be the artist who designed Pink Floyd’s album cover, or to be a Pink Floyd band member. He just made a piece of art.

The idea that he’s ripping off someone else’s art or “stealing” are completely outrageous. Derivative art is art. Most art wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for riffing off other people’s ideas, including almost all music in existence.

If I paint a mural on the side of my house of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”, is it not art because the mural I painted is based on someone else’s piece? If I make a drawing of Batman, is it not art because I have used a well-known image, or drawn a trademarked character?

I’m not asking if you would like the mural, or if you would be impressed by my drawing. I am asking is it art?

Do me a favor and show us the copyright which is being infringed upon. I’m pretty sure you are talking out of your hat on this one, but I am happy to be proven wrong.

Unless you are talking about the Arch Linux logo–are you saying people should not use the Arch Linux logo in their artwork?

This link you have presented is no smoking gun. If you take a moment to read through the link you have posted, you would observe this is not the so-called original piece either. The author says as much right in the description below the picture. It is just another artist’s riff on the same concept.

Why are you fine with Matt Kline’s artistic effort, but you have such a problem with someone else’s?

Not for nothing, but I think your accusation that @VitoF is a thief was an uncalled for below-the-belt jab. I’m not going to tell you what to do, but if it were me I would apologize for that one.

I think this whole thing is a bit outrageous. This is like someone showing up to open mic night with a cover of “Have a Cigar”, and getting accused by the audience of stealing the song and being a thief.

Much ado about nothing, I couldn’t remember seeing this Pink Floyd cover before, and liked Vito’s picture.
As the title says, show your artwork and if it’s not all from your own ideas write it down.

People here have taken pictures from the internet and slapped the Garuda G or the eagle head on it and said it was their art-work.

Again, call it remix or inspired by, not everyone knows every piece of art.

@Bro , humour me with copyrighting “light through a prism on black background” or is VitoF releasing vol 2.0 :joy:

As someone intimately familiar with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon it bugs the crap out of me that someone would infringe on their album cover, whether he knew it or not. Dark Side came out in '73. I turned 21, just out of the Navy. I did pretty much everything you would suspect 21-year olds did in 1973. That album (we had vinyl, woohoo) holds a lot of sentiment for me.

But as long as you all are sacrilegiously destroying the icons of my youth, here, just effing have another (late '79, my daughter born 4 months later):

(P.S. Not my artwork.)

I think "Legally" you are going to get a " No, you can't do that" if you are taking that idea to the bank, as in making money off of it, as far copies go. Online scrutiny isn't that important as far as I am concerned considering what people post everyday... Go a few steps lower to online memes with images, which is next to zero creative effort compared to the original.

Hehe.. as far as taking album covers.. Here its funny both ways of the argument. I can see a potential cringe as far as "I can remix what I want and call it mine." Same as the Chinese copying a BMW suv design and calling their own as per the "infamous" Top Gear episode.

If I took a concept and use parts of it I'd make most of it OG my ideas, as in original.. Was inspired by but actually make it yours.

This is your own country’s laws, and I already disproved your copyright claims multiple times in this thread, you still provide zero proof to your claims: Fair use - Wikipedia

Cool story, Bro.

I am a big fan of the band, I play lead guitar and I know all major songs from both the wall and dark side, though my favourite album is Animals. The thought process behind the wallpaper I posted was that I wanted to change my wallpaper with something simple and dark side’s album art came to mind as I glared onto my left wall, where that vinyl is hanged onto. Then I wanted to make it different and started searching for something premade, but nothing really was detailed enough for me, I remembered having seen the arch logo in the center in some t-shirts at uni, so I went for that base design and extended upon it. To make it obvious the base design wasn’t my own original, I even used the name used in previous postings of that design “arch side of the moon”, to make sure if other people didn’t like my spin but still wanted to search for a similar design, could just input the title on a search engine (like you did, so I guess it worked as intended).

Someone makes tribute art of a band you like and it “bugs the crap out of you”. I bet the band itself would rather have people tributing their work than have people attacking it without any logical reason.

I wrote this just to make sure you know I am invested in what that design represents and not just posting for the garuda-linux-forums equivalent of “easy karma”.
I still believe you’re just a troll, so I won’t be feeding you anymore, even if it was fun.
I still believe you’re just coming at me from a place of hatred and without any reason and logic, so discussing is pointless at best.

Sure, I expected such from an arch-based distro community, but, again, you’re right, I have added disclaimers and license notices on both the post and my gitlab in a timely manner, nobody has ever discussed you being wrong on this specific thing.
Maybe having a first post on that thread adding just a couple of guidelines would be cool. But it’s your own forum, you do you, still don’t expect people to read the previous 500+ messages and understand they need to put the word “Remix” when they use a distro logo on their artwork, if there are no guidelines.

It’s the internet, nothing new, I just wrongly expected people to be more mature on niche tech forums, but oh boy was I wrong.

Sorry, I sometimes forget that English is not everyone's native tongue. My last post included history and even a

Bass. And agreed.

I made a small video a while ago ,just for fun , I thought that it will get dead just after 2 or 3 views but no it wasn't !!! :eyes: , I hope that garuda team will leave me for this small stupidity

Why didn't you post this under, show your artwork or a hyprland thread?
THE HYPRLAND | garuda hyprland is not Off Topic Chit Chat

I didn't got that idea in my mind , can you move it there  ?

Come on, you can copy and paste it

I thought it was a nifty video. I didn't realize Hyprland looks like that UNIX/Linux computer desktop that TV & movie "hackers" use, but you never see in real life. Pretty darn cool!

And @SGS should shut up and compliment you on it.

He needs to get the ending better, then …

We could use people who make videos of Garuda without wanting to make money with it.

The reality is that I didn’t wanted to end at that point , I wanted to make it longer , but something is causing problem and I use to get logged out after 1/2 minutes of hang

I am currently trying different kernels to achieve no hang , I made another video for that purpose by changing from linux-cachyos-cacule kernel to linux-tkg-pds kernel , but I was again at the same fate :slightly_frowning_face: , here is the video :

In first testing , obs warking for long time so I thought I got right kernel , but yeah it also just did the same thing .

Well, I could do that , but I am out of knowledge , maybe some parameters on my system or a right kernel , IDK . That’s all I can do :slightly_smiling_face:
