All this outrage over @VitoF’s image seems like a tempest in a teacup to me. We’ve all seen the image before; an explanation that it is a derivative work was not necessary. No more so than when people riff on any other well-known meme on the internet.
He didn’t barge in claiming to have come up with the concept, or to have created the Arch Linux logo, or to be the artist who designed Pink Floyd’s album cover, or to be a Pink Floyd band member. He just made a piece of art.
The idea that he’s ripping off someone else’s art or “stealing” are completely outrageous. Derivative art is art. Most art wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for riffing off other people’s ideas, including almost all music in existence.
If I paint a mural on the side of my house of Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”, is it not art because the mural I painted is based on someone else’s piece? If I make a drawing of Batman, is it not art because I have used a well-known image, or drawn a trademarked character?
I’m not asking if you would like the mural, or if you would be impressed by my drawing. I am asking is it art?
Do me a favor and show us the copyright which is being infringed upon. I’m pretty sure you are talking out of your hat on this one, but I am happy to be proven wrong.
Unless you are talking about the Arch Linux logo–are you saying people should not use the Arch Linux logo in their artwork?
This link you have presented is no smoking gun. If you take a moment to read through the link you have posted, you would observe this is not the so-called original piece either. The author says as much right in the description below the picture. It is just another artist’s riff on the same concept.
Why are you fine with Matt Kline’s artistic effort, but you have such a problem with someone else’s?
Not for nothing, but I think your accusation that @VitoF is a thief was an uncalled for below-the-belt jab. I’m not going to tell you what to do, but if it were me I would apologize for that one.
I think this whole thing is a bit outrageous. This is like someone showing up to open mic night with a cover of “Have a Cigar”, and getting accused by the audience of stealing the song and being a thief.
