In Canada where both are national languages, that would likely spark a civil war. Except nowadays with all the teenagers smoking ganja and playing video games the civil war would need to be fought on the computer. :joy:

As you can see, Hindi covers a large portion of the map in saffron.
But as I have pointed out,

I doubt Maithili is even taught in schools in regions of Bihar (within the saffron) where it is spoken, even if it is a constitutionally recognised language.

The same is true with Jharkhand, the state I am currently in (also within the saffron).
There are many regional languages, but I don’t think the new generation is proficient or even gets to learn their mother tongue.

One thing to note though, is that some of these dialects share the same script as Hindi - Devanagari.

In my case, I have always been outside Kerala ever since I was born. So, I couldn’t get a proper opportunity to learn how to read and write Malayalam.

Isn’t one of the partys trying to split off French-Canada?

More so in the past, that movement has kind of lost steam. Again, probably a result of too much ganj and video games making the young supporters of separatism rather somnolent and apathetic.

As a hobby ethnologist (language and music) I am very interested in your comments. Thank you.

Edit: I didn’t know that Bengali was spoken on the Nicobar Islands. I would have assumed that a Dravidian language was spoken there.

My adoptive hometown, Juneau, Alaska, even got into the Holi party mood. Any excuse to ā€œpartyā€ is always welcome in Juneau. Can any place be further removed from India?

New Motorola phone, here. I hate it.

I can’t even figure out how to turn off the 50 jillian unneeded services its trying to run, before they drain the battery so much it turns off. I only need it for 3 things: text, talk, clock. That’s it. Trying to do any of those is a PIA I don’t want. I can’t even pawn it off on my wife, fer chrisake. :frowning:

KDE Plasma 6 is a real joy OTOH in comparison. I have to admit that the transition from 5 to 6, for me, was magnitudes better than I expected.

I had became so concerned about the transition that I volunteered as an unpaid lab rat for the Arch Linux Testing Team. (Still there.)

Lack of bloatware / unneeded services is one reason why I run a custom rom on my phone.
Have you ever tried one? Or maybe that would be overkill for you if you just use it for text / talk / clock.

I don’t root anything, any more, not after actually bricking a Compaq iPaq back in about 2003 or '04. What was I doing? Rooting. For a Linux ROM. It wouldn’t have been so bad except it made all the peripherals I bought for it worthless. Nowadays, if it don’t come willingly, I won’t take it hostage.

I wish I had my old (?) 2015 phone but unfortunately it went swimming-with-the-sharks and nothing could resurrect it.

I set my new phone to ā€œdo not disturbā€ mode with a few exceptions, but then have to turn it face-down to achieve ā€œrealā€ do-not-disturb. As if the initial do-not-eff-with-me setting wasn’t serious? Are they not serious? Do they think I’m joking? What if the alarm setting decides I’m just farting around? Linux does what I want, no more no less.

Linux has spoiled me.

I never thought about that before.

For quite a few years now installing a custom rom doesn’t have anything to do with rooting. That is thanks to Google / Android themselves.
In fact, people only root their devices after installing a custom rom if they want to / have a specific reason to.

You guys should check out GrapheneOS. A drawback is you need a Pixel phone to install it, but if you can get your hands on one it is definitely worth it. I’ve run a lot of custom ROMs over the years and they tend to be a little rough around the edges, but GrapheneOS is not–quite a bit more ā€œpolishedā€ than I am used to. Suitable even for ā€œnormiesā€, I’d say.

You also do not have to root your phone, or even drop to the command line in ADB or anything. Plug it in and use the online installer, it’s almost as easy as installing Garuda Linux.

No bloatware at all, in fact even Google crap isn’t installed by default. The best part is, even if you do install Google Play Services it runs as an ordinary sandboxed app (Usage guide | GrapheneOS), not a monolithic system process. You decide what Google has access to–not the other way around.

Without all the spyware and crap running on your phone, the battery life is incredible. All day long I use a web browser, listen to music, run Tailscale on an exit node, send messages, etc and when I plug my phone in to charge at night the battery is usually still at 70-80%.

Been running GrapheneOS for a few months now. It’s incredible, never going back.

A little steeper learning curve for normies but for anyone here I’d HIGHLY recommend it.

I bought my Pixel 6 to make use of GrapheneOS but quickly noticed no root life is not for me  I really liked it however feature wise. The real breaking point however was not being able to use my smart watch with it since the sandboxed Gapps didn’t seem to like it. I’m not sure whether this changed until today

I just got the Pixel 8 for freed by porting a Google Voice number. I only agreed to the phone cause the added line knocks 10 off my internet bill for a year. Since it would be my main phone I wouldn’t mind giving Graphene a run, but would need to know how it is on WiFi calling. For my roommate and myself on our main phones mobile data is typically off and we use our WiFi or WiFi hotspots and at home WiFi calling.

If you hacked your phone so why to leave the smart watch :stuck_out_tongue:

On doing some searching, I found this:

Here’s the link to the page where you can read up some more on it:

Also, here’s the search I used (I used Brave search) if you want to dig around some more on it:

I will say that I use Straight Talk (Verizon network), and WiFi calling works just fine for me. I normally don’t use WiFi calling so I had to test it, and do some digging.

I also have a new Motorola phone, got it for 180€. G82 5G, 12GB Ram, 256GB Flash-memory. I love it, just got an update to Anrdoid 14. Since I’m used to Android I deinstalled or disabled all the crap I don’t need, from TikTok to various Google to Motorola services. I find that easier than using an actually degoogled phone.
