Mediatek mt7922 - Bluetooth always disabled on startup

Hi there,

I can’t figured out why my bluetooth adapter won’t automatically enable on startup. I always have to manually enable bluetooth in the system tray first. After being manually enabled, it works fine until i reboot the computer.

I have checked that :

  • bluetooth.service is enabled in systemctl
  • AutoEnable=true in /etc/bluetooth/main.cf
  • The option “Enable bluettoth device on startup” is selected in Plasma system configuration

But nothing worked, my computer just boots with bluetooth disabled every time.

Thanks a lot for any help

Problem start after system update?

Hi,

The problem stays the same with X11.

I’m not sure exactly when it started, i just didn’t use bluetooth before. I am now because i bought a new wireless game controller.

hello Azerist,

can you check your Bluetooth Settings again to watch for these Settings.

ups overread it you did already.but just for sure.

can you check this please ?
rfkill list in the Terminal and post your output please.thx

Yeah already checked that setting multiple times, it’s set on the first option “enable bluetooth”

rfkill list :

0: hci0: Bluetooth
  Soft blocked: no
  Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
  Soft blocked: no
  Hard blocked: no

ok so no issue here to see.

ive think you did try already this but no help after reboot sudo systemctl enable bluetooth.service

can you check to update your Bios? Because you have the AMD R7 5800X3D CPU?

with the newer from this if you have the version from this but watch for your right rev:x.x Number because we dont know which one.

Yeah already enabled bluetooth.service in systemd…

Strange for the bios, i’ll check that tomorrow but i thought i upgraded it much more recently than 2023.

I have the same problem with BT since Kernel 6.0. Plasma uses bluedevil and powerdevil, and the combination of those just sucks ass and they didn’t fix a darn thing so far.

I have to open up the setting panel → bluetooth → try to conncet Sony XM4, and it disables the BT adaptor all together. I have to enable it again and wait about 30 seconds for the list of BT devices to show up again and it connects for the 2nd time.

I’m really tired of this routine, but I don’t know where I take it to.

Isao

You don’t have use bluedevil and powerdevil. there are alternatives:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_management

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/TLP

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/tlpui

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Powertop

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Bluetooth

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Blueman

Before changing your Bluetooth or Power Manager, I would suggest testing alternate kernels such as:

linux-mainline

or

linux-lts

The kernel in use has a huge bearing on how well Bluetooth performs, as support for Bluetooth comes explicitly from the kernel in use.

The MediaTek mt7921 & mt7922 have been at the top of the list for the most problematic adapters requiring assistance on the forum for the last several years. Consider yourself extremely lucky if you can get WiFi and Bluetooth working properly with either of those sub-par adapters.

Oh ok.

Well so far bluetooth works well - once manually activated.
I don’t use wifi on this machine, it’s just that internal adapters usually come with both.

But thanks for the heads-up, i’ll consider buying another wireless card maybe.

I have ordered a new adapter from TP-link (former was Asus) which is specified to use an intel chip.

I’ll check back here in a week when i get it and say if it helped solving the issue.

Had the idea to go check journalctl -xeu bluetooth.service but i can’t see much there, except maybe the last line that shows a strange error :

Well looks like your were right, it suddenly stopped working (not detected anymore, not showing up in lsusb either…).

I’ll wait to see if it works with the new one i ordered, and then ask for a refund for this one which is barely a month old :o

There are two things that can sometimes help when this occurs:

  • Switch to the linux-lts kernel.

  • Reset your bios back to the factory default.

Bluetooth works again with the new adapter which has an intel chip as shown by lsusb:

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 8087:0029 Intel Corp. AX200 Bluetooth

But it still gets disabled on startup.

However i’ve noticed a bit more: it does seem enabled after startup for like 2 or 3 seconds, i can see it in the system tray and clicking on it shows ‘active’, but something seems to automatically turn it of after idk how much time but less than 5s.

Looking through my auto-startup application list, i finally found the culprit and it seems to be Steam.

Whenever i start Steam (automatically or manually) it seems to disable buetooth…

If I remove steam from automatic startup list then bluetooth stays enabled. But whenever i start steam manually later it gets disabled again.

did you try to turn off the internal bluetooth in the bios settings and use only the dongle for testing?

how your garuda-inxi look with it?
