Many Steam games crash on load

Hi all,
I’ve updated a few times in the past week or so, and in that time some Windows games that I’ve been playing through Proton have suddenly started crashing. I’ve tried using different compatibility settings: Glorious Eggroll, Proton Experimental, etc; none of that seems to have helped. Running Steam from the terminal I can see the following error:

wine: using kernel write watches, use_kernel_writewatch 1.
Setting breakpad minidump AppID = 614570
Steam_SetMinidumpSteamID: Caching Steam ID: 76561198013843861 [API loaded no]
wine: using kernel write watches, use_kernel_writewatch 1.
Fossilize INFO: Overriding serialization path: "/home/kestrel/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/shadercache/614570/fozpipelinesv6/steamapprun_pipeline_cache".
amdgpu_device_initialize: DRM version is 1.6.0 but this driver is only compatible with 3.x.x.
Fossilize INFO: Overriding serialization path: "/home/kestrel/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/shadercache/614570/fozpipelinesv6/steamapprun_pipeline_cache".
wine: setpriority 4 for pid -1 failed: 3

That makes me think something’s up with the AMD driver, but I’m not sure where to go from there. Any help is appreciated. In case it’s relevant, the two games I’ve seen this on so far are Guild Wars 2 and Dishonored: Death of the Outsider.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Edit: I’ve also tried both Wayland and X11.

I’m not a gamer, so I can only suggest checking in the Arch wiki, e g.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Steam/Troubleshooting#Game_crashes_immediately
Before that, maybe you could try installing and then booting the linux-lts kernel and headers.

Thanks for the linux-rts suggestion. That didn’t entirely help, but using lts rather than zen probably makes sense anyway. I did try firing up a game and actually was able to launch and play for 2 or 3 minutes before it crashed, so the amdgpu message may be a red herring. I noticed some errors about the overlay renderer, so I tried turning off the Steam overlay, but it didn’t seem to help:

I’ll trying checking out that Arch Wiki link.

i had the same problem, and down loaded through proton-up, the latest proton Tkg version, and the games that wouldn’t work any longer all worked again.

Thanks! That thread held the answer for me; just had to enable resizable BAR in my BIOS.

I thought it was fixed too from an update a system update a day ago, was playing Skyrim SE just fine with Vulkan. Today, I fired it up and it crashes. It is weird.

Bug Report Here

More of like random considering that it has to do with memory and can be pretty random depending on the intensity of the load of the game(s). If you don’t have the BIOS options for the work-around (resizable BAR and 4g decoding options; make sure BIOS is up to date as some are updated to support resizable BAR), it will be fixed in kernel 6.9 as stated.

I tried a 6.9-1 mainline kernel and ran my game a couple of times now without issue using Vulkan. Fingers crossed. You might want to give it a go.
