So my desktop looks like this after cleaning out files…

All my icons are gone, the desktop background wont change. I have no idea what happened, what I do know is that I used BleachBit and got this. I tried reinstalling XFCE4, and rebooting a few times but I still keep getting this. It appears most of the system is still functional, but I can’t figure this problem out.

  1. Don’t use bleachbit and friends - This is an extreme version of the above point. These tools often “over clean” and break your system or applications.

Helpful guide by dalto.

Try garuda-assistant - Restore - All.

No, go… I didn’t see any restore option. I did try an reinstall all the packages however with no change

It looks different with Xfce than with i3wm?
I even see Bleachbit. First page of garuda-assistant.

This is what I see, are you talking about resetting configs. I thought there was a restore option in there.

We must be having a communication problem.
I’m out of here then.

Well your right, we are. For starters, I’m not fluent in reading German.

Second, I reset all the configs and still nothing.

Read BleachBit User Manual or any Official web Documentation, to find out what it does by default. I don’t think it is fair to ask someone else to do it for you :man_shrugging: .

I can see a lot of icons in your image. Maybe you mean Desktop icons , which are usually at $XDG_DESKTOP_DIR folder. Check:

ls -la $XDG_DESKTOP_DIR

IIRC xfce settings includes a configuration for Desktop, Icons, Background or something similar. Set it to Desktop icons and set a background wallpaper.

Re-installing packages will never change any configuration in your $HOME folder, where all the mentioned settings are saved in files (in $XDG_CONFIG_HOME).

Ya, like the trash icon, and I had a few shortcuts to some WINE programs + my background desktop. What your see is the panel bars which work. When I try to restore the desktop background, it just stays a black image.

Nothing is restoring what I had when I go through all the settings.

Ya I get that. What had happened was when I used Insync to unsync some files I had to my cloud service. It had dumped 400+ gigs in the trash bin and when I tried to clean up the files it would stall out my system, so I turned to BleachBit to clear it out (just that section) and that’s when all the fun began.

Now I just can’t seem to restore the desktop

Fellow Canadian, you have to try to communicate with technical terms, as it seems a Greek (myself) and a German guy (@SGS ) cannot understand your technical problem. For a technical troubleshooting, observations, while assisting, they are not really helpful. No offense. We try to help you fix your issue. :man_shrugging:

For example:

Post the output of the given command

How? Describe your method.

How? Describe your method.

What did you observe? What do you mean stalled in somewhat more desriptive words? Were you logged out the session, had to hard-reboot? How did you get over it?

To clear what out? The trash bin? Is your trash bin full of files now? How did you try to empty it and failed?

And more, at your discretion.

None taken, I understand that at times I can be difficult to deal with. I don’t mean to be, I’m just faced with some additional challenges in life which can make simple tasks more difficult to work with at times. Please forgive me for that.

First, I thought it was a matter of just changing the background so went to Menu/Settings/Desktop to get this…

Clearly this didn’t work, so I referred to a previous post of something which I thought happened before.

So in the end, after redoing this, I thought I would get a desktop that would look similar to what I had before, this:
image

I tried to install all the packages again (which didn’t work). I also tried to reset the configs with Garuda Assistant (which again, didn’t work).

I used BleachBit with only the following options selected (if my memory serves me correctly)

After following SGS’s advice, I cleaned out the configs so I don’t remember what I had before.

This is where it gets complicated…so I have this program called Insync installed on my computer. I have a Dropbox cloud share for my university work and some other odd files. I wanted to leave them on the could rather then have access to them stored locally on my hard drive, so I un-synchronized them.

So in other words, I removed “CloudMiscellaneous” off my drive so that it was stored in the cloud space.

Now once I decoupled the files off my hard drive, Insync threw these files into my local trash bin. I found this odd, but, never the less, that is how this program handled it.

I then went to the trash bin to empty it out, and it had like 400+ gigs worth of files in it. Just clicking “Empty Trash” on the bottom of the screen, I had noticed my system eating up so much processing power that I could just barely move the mouse. Now why all this would happen when you empty the trash? I don’t know, I don’t have that expertise to answer that. What I do know is, it got stuck, it was stuck like this for over an hour, so I gave up and powered off my computer to reboot it. At this point, I tried BleachBit to take out the trash, and it worked…it just took out my desktop with it.

That is correct, the trash bin. No my trash bin is empty, I got a huge chunk of my hard drive space returned to me. It worked, it just took the baby with the bathwater out with it for lack of a better terminology.

Again, I emptied it by following the BleachBit commands:

Go to that utility and select the Icons tab. That is where you set what appears in the Desktop (icons, or no icons, drive icons, etc.).

At the Background tab, look into the Colour combo-box list for other options. IIRC, Solid Colour means no wallpaper, just a solid color you select with those buttons at left. Try it. I don’t use XFCE in my PCs to test.

Your desktop icons should be in Desktop folder. Check out.

ls -la ~/Desktop

About BleachBit actions, the only potentially destructive in the options you have showed is the Broken desktop files. I have no clue of its smartness, and how it could pick the broken files (which I assume it deletes them).

When I select the icons tab…this is what you see:

When I select the backgrounds tab…this is what you see:

So in other words, after following your suggestions…nothing happens. It’s like the settings are disconnected from the system. You can select all the settings you want, and nothing happens beyond that.

I would look in xsession-errors for relevant messages.

I would also rename the xfce folder in ~/.config, so any broken config would reset to default and start from scratch.

That’s all I can think of. Sorry.

If this app did not works on your system, do not use it.

You can create a new user, but if that doesn’t work, and all errors persist, you’ve messed up the system.

Happy weekend.
Over and out.

The more appropriate oft repeated cliche is, it’s pretty damn hard to unscramble scrambled eggs.

It bears repeating that under no circumstances is it ever a good idea to use Bleachbit for system maintenance. Often after Bleachbit performs its insidious black magic, all the kings horses and all the kings men can’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.

Sometimes when trying to delete thousands upon thousands of files it can bog the system down severely. If you know you want to delete thousands of filles it is often far quicker and it creates less problems to simply delete the entire directory. Deleting the entire directory should only take a second vs deleting every file sequentially. After everything has been deleted you can simply recreate the directory without further complications.

Another possibility that could have initially caused your issue was that perhaps the trash bin contained a file/files that were corrupted. This can make it almost impossible in some situations to delete files completely. In some really stubborn cases I’ve had to resort to deleting a file/files from a root terminal from a live boot environment.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful, but sometimes Bleachbit causes problems that it’s super difficult to track down the cause. In these types of situations, sometimes the only remedy is to restore your system from a full system image you created recently. If you don’t keep full system backups and you can’t track down the cause the last resort is to wipe your system and reinstall.

To avoid ever having to do this, you must keep full system backups. Backing up individual files in the cloud is a good way to protect your data, but that will not help fix an unbootable system, etc. Snapshots are a great safety net to fall back on, but they are not as reliable as a full system backup.

I the end, sometimes the only thing that can really help unscramble a fully borked system is restoring from a full backup of your system in a good working state or reinstalling.

I’m not saying your system is unfixable as it stands, but without backups sometimes the effort involved to track down the cause simply isn’t worth all the time it takes compared to reinstalling.

Good luck finding your fix, but best not to ever use Bleachbit in the first place.

So basically deleting the entire directory of the trash bin is what I need to do in the future?

Is there some alternative program that would be better to use other then BleachBit that you know of?

I’m not apposed to rebuilding my system, I would just like to know a better program to use so I can delete BleachBit from a fresh rebuild

Did you try this? Sign in as the new user and see if the desktop is “normal”.

BleachBit is so-called snake oil, isn’t it?

In all honesty, I’m still trying to figure out how to do that
