Linux & Tech news 📰

Agree, it is a guessing game what their plans are going forward, alexa devices, android replacement or both, but it is there, being worked on.

According to a report from the International Data Corporation (IDC), 'the consequence of this increasing reliance on data will be a never-ending expansion in the size of the Global Datasphere.'

The report shows the estimated zettabytes (ZB), a measure of digital storage capacity, in 2019 was just 45ZB, but by 2025 that is set to increase to 175ZB.

One zettabyte is equivalent to a trillion gigabytes.

'If you were able to store the entire Global Datasphere on DVDs, then you would have a stack of single layer Blu-ray discs that could get you to the moon 23 times or circle Earth 222 times,' IDC shared in the report.

The dramatic increase is imminent, and Derry and his team hope to find a solution before time runs out.

This is part of the broader GNOME effort for making X11 support optional and ultimately allowing for a modern Wayland-only environment if so desired and without carrying legacy X11 cruft.

Merged yesterday to Mutter was the build system code that had been under review for more than a half-year to allow building Mutter while disabling XWayland support. A new "xwayland" build option is added to toggle whether XWayland is built as part of Mutter.

This is part of the larger effort to eventually allow Mutter to be built as a Wayland-only compositor if desired and making all of the X11 dependent code optional.

Of course it's tailored for the GNOME Shell. It's a display server created to run under systemd, which was created by (then) Red Hat developer Lennart Poettering: Lennart Poettering - Wikipedia

He has blessed/cursed us with many other modern Linux operating system protocals. Poettering received death threats over systemd.

For anyone that cares about HDR support in Linux, some possible good news: Red Hat Planning A Hackfest To Further Advance HDR Support On The Linux Desktop

And on the same note, Valve also seems to be putting in some work on HDR gaming on Linux:

https://nitter.net/Plagman2/status/1610200412854046720#m

New Linux gaming milestone: with the latest work from Josh Ashton, HDR can now be enabled for real games! Tested it tonight on my AMD desktop with Halo Infinite, Deep Rock Galactic, DEATH STRANDING DC. Very early and will still need some time to bake to be useful to most

Maybe we are going to start to see some substantive progress in the coming months/years with regard to HDR and Linux

I have mixed feelings about Google developing RISC-V. On the one hand, drumming up some interest in RISC-V is good, and they certainly have the resources to make some real progress. On the other hand, there is a looming probability they will make some profound advancements in a very specific way that is difficult to divorce from whatever Google perversion they layer into it, like they have done with other open-source projects like Android or the Chromium browser.

I don't think Google can mess up here. It's just an instruction set architecture - instructions that dictate a processor as required by software. If at all Google does something, it would be to create more efficient instructions, and why would anyone want to give bad instructions? RISC V is an open standard and won't be restricted to phones and PCs.
