Linux & Tech news 📰

I have to say, I’m still not very shaken by it. I’ve had my personal MSI betrayal before, which I still will not forgive them for. I was going to link their PC build video for the sake of context on some of their controversy, but they’ve done all they can to scrub it from the internet :see_no_evil:… Someone put a few screenshots on Imgur, and I think we can all agree that this isn’t the “right” way to get customer attention. It was fine to exist on YT for years, but I don’t want it to embed here.

Don't click this at work! Shield your eyes!

MSI Memory Girl - Album on Imgur

I regularly help Windows users with Asus boards go into BIOS to turn off their outdated crapware auto-installer… It comes enabled by default now, and re-enables after upgrades. Until that situation changes, Asus doesn’t have a place with me. That’s entirely disregarding the recent outrages with their warranty claims.

As long as ASRock gives an update to fix the problem and addresses it, I’ll cope, but I’m not happy about it. If they don’t… I guess I’m just left with Gigabyte. I’m running out of confidence. No brand has innocence at this point.

Ultimately, you shouldn’t buy solely based on brand loyalty, you should buy based on specs and price. That’s how I ended up with the X870 PG Riptide. Before you lock-on to a particular board, give full consideration to your needs:

I totally forgot about that MSI stuff… Why did you remember me xD

I am done with Asus as well, same reason particularly those RMA claims, and Warranty dodges etc. Asus is not much a company to be trusted. And before all of this I was using a lot of Asus parts. But they went rogue.

I also disable the Armory crate nonsense in BIOSes for people. BTW MSI has something similar in BIOS, but its visible on the 1st page and can be easily found and disabled.

I didnt want Gigabyte MOBOs, because they have in the BIOS set auto update features (or something like that) that reaches to domains that do not anymore exist, which creates a possible security concern…

I went with the MSI tomahawk this generation due to 2 reasons

  1. It had a good price in my country, it was cheaper than ASrock and Gigabyte boards
  2. Considering above it provided better value/features

And yes MSI had a loooot of escapades, but considering the options… well this time MSI came out for me as the best option.

I did lot of personal research what board to get before buying it. Considering the local market. Building PC or refreshing parts its a lengthy process that is not done over night

Brand loyalty also doesn’t mean anything to me. If I see a company doing BS I stop buying from them and look for alternative.

I understand your anger. It’s best you raise your concerns with the correct channels like the Electronic Frontier Foundation or Privacy International.

I myself should also check before I post. :bowing_man:

Do these organizations really make that much of a difference? In the end government really only does what the highest paying NGO tells them to do regardless of the arguments made.

Thats what my personal experience and perceptions of the world show me at least

I really don’t know effective they are, but think for a moment. Who else is going to raise the issue?

well, were at a point where the classic saying “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself” comes into effect. Everyone wants change in the world but nobody is willing to change. What I think is, we should just stop arguing, stop debating, just stop cooperating and go about your business not complying and teach others to do more of what government doesn’t approve of in great numbers till the people in power change regulations since what ever situation your facing becomes not able to be regulated.

I have removed several offensive posts from this thread that others have complained about. Anyone making further statements about injuring CEO’s or “ending” government officials is treading on thin ice. Violent language and threats are unwanted on our forum.

This is not open for discussion, desist now.

My next motherboard is going to have PCIx slots and “atleast” 2 (I prefer 4), Intel Xenon processors on it. I’m sick of buying computers of thousands of dollars with my own money all my life and when I blink my eyes, the computer hasn’t fully loaded the operating system yet. For once, I just want to count to 3 from turning on the power switch and boom…ready to run all your apps…just once, I would love for this to happen

Maybe learn what you’re doing?

This thread is for Linux and related tech news. There is way too much antagonistic, anarchistic, and political rhetoric being spewed on this thread of late. I’m giving this thread a bit of cooling off period, so that those stirring the pot repeatedly can rethink their behavior.

If these inappropriate type of comments continue, the offenders will be taking some time off from the forum as well. It is many hours after midnight in North America. I suggest those posting from this region should sober up and head to bed. That’s about enough nonsense from you guys, you’re really starting to try my patience.

Time to give it a rest guys, we’ll continue this thread once eveyone’s had a chance for some sober reflection.

Apple has reportedly filed a legal complaint with the UK’s Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) contesting the British government’s order that it must forcibly break the encryption of iCloud data.

If you own any of the above devices, it is likely that you will not be able to get clean firmware for them.

Instead, these devices should be replaced with those from reputable brands. If it is impossible to replace the device, they should be disconnected from the Internet.

I will say I’m fairly impressed, especially since ATI / AMD have come a long ways from the days of a new driver release being a disaster. On Windows I always dreaded a new driver release and waited at least 2 weeks before I would grab it so they could work out the bugs.

I think it will be the same as here where they opened one phone up for the U.S. government but never gave them how their encryption works.
