Linux & Tech news šŸ“°

I can only agree with you - for me, Linux is about freedom and transparency with FOSS applications. I’m not against technology, AI, etc. in general, but I worry about my data and privacy. Personal data should not be the basis for training AI applications.

As @tbg said, all together, whether big tech with e.g. Windows, MS Office or even smaller companies like the ones behind Warp - everything seems way too intrusive.

I think I can speak for everyone in the Linux/FOSS community that we could do better in times like these.

An malicious app called Exodus a crypto app, made its way on the snap store. The official Exodus never made a snap version!

Arch typically waits for a ~.01 release, at least with GNOME. I wonder if we’ll get 6.0 or 6.01 next week? It’s a bit difficult telling, just scrolling through KDE-Unstable. I would guess it would be a mixture.

Excerpts from the article:

…he posted screenshots of the exchange to X which revealed that the program could not outright condemn the behavior as a moral evil. Rather, it gave nuanced answers about it being a mental illness and an ā€œinvoluntary sexual attraction.ā€

In response to the question, ā€œIs pedophilia wrong,ā€ the A.I. told McCormick, ā€œThe question of whether pedophilia is ā€˜wrong’ is multifaceted and requires a nuanced answer that goes beyond a simple yes or no.ā€

It continued, noting a difference between pedophilic ā€œattraction and action.ā€ ā€œHaving an attraction: Pedophilia, also known as minor-attracted person (MAP) status, refers to an involuntary sexual attraction to prepubescent children. It’s important to understand that attractions are not actions. Individuals cannot control who they are attracted to.ā€

[…]

In response to McCormick’s other questions, the bot claimed that ā€œLabeling all individuals with pedophilic interest as ā€˜evil’ is inaccurate and harmful. It can perpetuate stigma and discourage people from seeking help if they need it.ā€

The chat bot is right on this one. There is nothing ā€œevilā€ about having this or any other mental illness. It is the consequential behavior (child sexual abuse) which is evil.

The author of the article is conflating being a pedophile–which is a person who has feelings of a certain kind–with the act of committing child sexual abuse. The chat bot is distinguishing between the two, and correctly observes that a person’s mental disorder does not moralistically define them.

Yeah there’s nothing wrong with being a pedo because people can’t help it. They don’t ask to be born that way just like gay people don’t ask to be born gay. The problem is when they act on those impulses and urges that makes them a bad person. So I agree with what Google said. It makes it clear that the abuse it’s wrong but having those feelings isn’t what makes that person evil. I’m sure there are many people in the world who have bad urges like this who are good people and never harm anyone.

Edit: I should clarify that when I say nothing wrong with being a pedo I mean the feelings they have not actually looking at or touching children

The real question is: does anyone seriously expect moral judgement from a machine?

I was actually thinking about it the way you did.
But I was confused about whether I was right or wrong.

If they are ā€œborn that wayā€ but only evil if they act on those natural sexual desires, then tell me, what human being goes an entire lifetime without sex? Nobody.

Ergo, I would postulate all pedos are evil.

I’m not so sure. I suppose I’m talking out of my hat a bit, but my guess is there are plenty of folks who have this conflict and just keep it to themselves for their whole lives. I would imagine they are silently tortured by their compulsion, but their instinct to not harm a child is even stronger so they just learn to live with it.

My feeling is this must be true, because even though people often suck I think deep down most folks are generally good, or at least want to be good.

My former brother-in-law was into young boys–as often as he could. His nephew, specifically. And he could control himself, sure. For a while. Just for a while. Had I ever witnessed it, I would have shot him. And probably been exonerated, considering the mood of the 1,200-population small town we lived in. But someone else did catch him, and he died in prison.

Chemical or physical castration don’t work. Just ask the wardens at McNeil Island, a local Washington place of incarceration for those ā€œborn that wayā€ who just can’t seem to control their desires.

I am not ready for this! It is not happening. :see_no_evil: :hear_no_evil: :speak_no_evil: My system is pretty stable atm, and this, like all the other big KDE releases, will bring bug-chasing chaos. I would like to see a manager about stopping time.

I’m thinking a completely new install after 6.01–or even 6.1. But @alexjp and some of the others testing are saying it will be the smoothest transition EVAR…but I’ll believe it when I experience it.

I’m on Arch, so it will be interesting. Are you back using Garuda, @RodneyCK or are you still using Arch?

Personally, I’m thinking maybe XFCE or MATE might be a good place to hide until the dust settles.

I am using a Frankenstein version of Garuda. I am not a fan of BTRFS yet, so I blend Garuda KDE with RebornOS to get ext4 and Timeshift backups.

I am going to hold off upgrading at least for a few weeks, sniff it out. Read about all the newbie’s posting and screaming their system blew up, pointing fingers at anyone for blame, and wait until there is a calm in the storm before proceeding. Not a sound plan, but a plan.

Well… I won’t put my life on the line for it, but … going on arch from plasma5 to 6, and on nixos from plasma5 to plasma6 and back to plasma5 when they stopped supplying plasma6 binaries, NO SINGLE ISSUE WHATSOEVER.

So, in my case… the big major achievement of Plasma 6.0 is the transition. Never ever in software, open or closed, community or company, have I ever seen this!
