Latest Kernel 6.11.1 broke everything

Well my bad for saying packages do not require Linux kernel as a dependency explicitly, as for partial upgrades , I would say they are not advisable but can be utilised for stability and usability if a recent kernel version causes issues.

And just to add to it which I should have said way earlier, holding the kernel package like this is only safe (mostly) for a few months (6-8 months max) at best. After which one should give a new kernel version a try. Doing this for years or longer can and WILL cause issues.

Kinda feel ashamed that I forgot to say this earlier.
3-4 months was the context I was talking about freezing kernel packages.

2-3 months is the sweet spot in IMO if one has the NECESSITY of the ABSOLUTE NEED to freeze the kernel package.

Again comes to my experience, I have held kernel updates a few time mostly for a month or two at best and can say I have never faced issues. LTS is the kernel version which I have used for long and held updates for.

NOTE FOR NEW USERS:
All this freezing package procedure is in regards with SOLELY the kernel packages. This post talks about freezing the kernel package excluding any other packages dependent on it.

To freeze the updates for kernel packages, add their package name to the IgnorePkg line in /etc/pacman.conf and remove the # at the starting of the line.

So you will have IgnorePkg = linux linux-headers or something similar.
Proceed to do this ONLY after reading the context above or suffer the consequences.

@BluishHumility , I have added a note to all my replys and tried to fix the mess I unknowingly made. Sorry to everyone.

After I updated to Plasma 6.2 and some other bluetooth apps and libraries, I get the same freezing issue every time I pluig / unplug USB dongles. I started to think this is more of a bluetooth driver issue than latest kernel problem. I am typing from 6.11.2 with Plasma 6.2, but I know as soon as I plug in a new USB device, my PC will freeze up.

Here is the output of journalctl:

Idk about things but you gotta put the output in code blocks man, it is really difficult to decipher anything otherwise , select the text output and click on the code icon in edit mode: </> this one to put it in code blocks for you.

I think either kdeconnect or bluedevil app is causing the issue, including the system freeze.

Might wanna downgrade again, downgrading packages and keeping them like so for a month in regard to linux-zen wont hurt your system’s stability or you can try the linux-lts kernel, these kind of issues were common at one time due to a kernel update as I saw on EndeavourOS forum and the fix was to be downgraded at the time.

So perhaps add your kernel to the IgnorePkg and downgrade it to the last version which worked fine for you and keep it like so for a month or so until a new update fixes things.

Once a newer version comes out which fixes your issue, you can remove the packages from IgnorePkg and get on with updates and keep slaying !

Also you might wanna read my last reply to @BluishHumility which can give you a general idea of stability if you hold packages and how to avoid breakages if you downgrade(only in the context of sole kernel packages).

Yep, I read that already.

If the kernel acts up really unstable, that would be the only option, like waiting out a storm.

I snapped back to 6.11.2 before this morning’s Plasma 6.2 update, yet still bluetooth was acting up. I tried manually reloading btusb driver and bluetooth and system stability came back. I really don’t know what’s going on…

If you feel blue devil is part of your issue you could always try replacing it with an alternate power manager such as:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/TLP

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Powertop

For further information see:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_management

I would try replacing blue devil with TLP first, as this suggestion solved an issue with a crashing system a little while back.

You could also try replacing the Bluetooth management utility bluez with blueman to see if there is any improvement. This switch can also sometimes help with severe Bluetooth complications.

To install the blueman package, issue the command:

sudo pacman -S blueman

Thanks for the links and info, tbg.

I am closing this thread as the cause of the problem is shifting towards bluetooth, USB, and Plasma 6.2.

I believe the following 3 things fixed the problems:

  1. Unplugging unnecessary USB devices.
  2. Waited out to 6.11.2.
  3. Double reboot cleared up something that was sticking.

Thanks everyone who gave me all the info.
