Just ran garuda-update. It disappeared along with all open programs. Afraid to reboot. And now it's borked

Ran garuda-update in Alacrity terminal and answered Y to update. Went to another workspace (KDE) and noticed previously running programs (like Thunderbird) were no longer there. I went back to workspace with running garuda-update and it was also gone.

Being cautious about the next step. Should I try to reboot? Should I run garuda-update again?

make sure you didn’t accidentally switch to another virtual desktop/ workspace or switch the programs or otherwise that the programs aren’t still open using activity monitor or htop. and maybe have a look at dmesg. are you using x11 or Wayland and on what graphics processor?

do you have both krunner5 and krunner (6.x) installed?

I’ve never specifically installed krunner at all. Whatever came with Garuda is what was installed.

well if you use AUR or a few other things you can unintentionally end with with many strange installs. in any case kwin and krunner should be fine to just die and not effect your open programs in most cases so idk. My only guess would be that the best course of action is to run updater again and if it runs swimmingly just restart your system normally and ideally move on with your day. I am not qualified to give expert advice though. in the event of that going wrong a live usb to access the system snapshots will probably save the day anyway.

Haha. Thanks for the info. I was actually thinking of waiting for more input since I don’t need to reboot right now. Everything is back running again. I just saw some posts that seemed related to garuda-update that looked a bit frightening. I’ve been there before and this was too bizarre not to ask about it. I mean, all my programs closing…terminal with garuda-update closing…

Back up your data , make a bootable pendrive, so that in case even if you’re not able to boot after update, you can just reinstall the ISO or perform a boot repair.
(I am not following the thread but I can say this as a suggestion)

Tried a couple snapshots:

I hope you have a live usb (we all should! Always).
Boot with it, use the chroot function in the Garuda Welcome and, when inside chroot, re-try a garuda-update.
Provide relevant outputs (you’ll have internet access, of course)

I do and have the USB booted. Yes, I found the chroot in the Welcome - running garuda-update now
