Introducing Shanios – Immutable OS Now Available for Testing!

Hello everyone,

I’m excited to announce that Shanios is now available for download and testing at shani.dev! This project is built to deliver an immutable, secure, and reliable operating system experience. I’m eager for you to try it out and share your feedback.

What Makes Shanios Unique?

Immutable Architecture & Dual-Root Strategy:

  • Btrfs-Based Dual-Root System:
Shanios leverages a dual-root setup built on Btrfs. We maintain two complete roots—blue and green. When you’re booted into one slot (e.g., blue), the system upgrades the other (green) in the background. This ensures every upgrade is atomic, and you can roll back instantly if needed.
  • Read-Only System with Writable Overlays:
The system image is a read-only Arch Linux pacstrap image, ensuring stability and consistency. Key directories are managed with:
    • /etc Overlay: Allows dynamic configuration without altering the immutable base.
    • /var as tmpfs: Mounted via systemd.volatile to keep runtime data separate and secure.
    • Btrfs Snapshots & Subvolumes: These features enable robust rollback and system recovery options.

Advanced Installer & Live Environment:

  • Sway-Powered Live Installer:
The installer runs in live mode using Sway, offering a modern, minimalistic interface that’s both responsive and efficient.
  • OEM Ready with GNOME:
After installation, Shanios uses GNOME as the default desktop environment. With gnome-initial-setup preconfigured, the OEM installation process is streamlined, allowing you to personalize your system from the start.

Enhanced System Features:

  • Swapfile for Hibernation:
A dedicated swapfile is included to support hibernation, ensuring your sessions can be saved and resumed effortlessly.
  • Encryption Support:
Full disk encryption support is built in to protect your data and enhance security.
  • Preinstalled NVIDIA-Open Drivers:
For users with NVIDIA hardware, NVIDIA drivers come preinstalled to ensure optimal performance and compatibility.

Update & Deployment Mechanism:

  • Blue/Green Update Strategy:
Shanios tracks the active slot and uses the shani-deploy command to upgrade the inactive slot. This approach delivers seamless, zero-downtime updates and provides a reliable rollback mechanism.
  • Flatpak Integration for User Applications:
All user applications are distributed as Flatpak packages, keeping them isolated from the core system and simplifying updates.

Modern Boot & UEFI Support:

  • The system uses systemd-boot along with UEFI images, ensuring smooth boot processes and compatibility with modern hardware.
  • Comprehensive Live ISO:
The live ISO includes both the complete system image and a separate Flatpak filesystem. While this results in a larger file size, it guarantees a comprehensive testing environment with all essential components.

I invite everyone to download the latest Shanios release from

https://sourceforge.net/projects/shanios/files/gnome/20250307/signed_shanios-2025.03.07-x86_64.iso

and explore this new era of immutable operating systems. Your insights and feedback are crucial as we continue to refine and enhance Shanios.

Feel free to post your experiences, report any issues, or share suggestions in this thread. Let’s work together to push the boundaries of reliability, security, and seamless updates!

Cheers,
Shrinivas Vishnu Kumbhar

Might have to give this a try on my roommates system cause he’s at a point age wise I can’t afford to have a OS on his system that can’t be instantly restored, and since we have no timeframe on when KDE’s immutable Arch distro is dropping this def looks worth a spin. So I for one say thank you.

Welcome back @librewish.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from you. So nice to see the co-founder of Garuda back on the forum again.

Good luck with your newest creation, and don’t be a stranger.

The picture shows an eagle, also called Garuda in India. In the background is Saturn, which makes the connection to Shani.

Gnome were never my thing, but maybe Shani will give me his blessing, who knows?

Here I am!!
Love the OS, Hate the “Manage every app from GNOME Software” because Gnome Software Centre sucks.
But overall I love this! I installed it on the other laptop which I don’t use often so now I don’t have to worry about it!

Thanks for the correction.

Actually I have used shim as bootloader which chainloads systemd-boot

I am not sure if it works with secureboot on

In theory it should work

But I don’t know so i have not added about it.

Will give it a try one of these days and get back to you. (i got a spare drive just for these kind of installations.)

i gave the distro a try and have not been able to install it.

Selecting an USB m2 SDD seems to be a problem, for it cannot format it, choose a partition, not even when reformatted BTRF, or even when the whole disk is blank/empty. i have no other empty disk to try it out on, but as is it will not install

here is my garuda-inxi, (if that is helpful at all)

 I guess the os-installer can’t handle these many drives

Will see what can be done

The os-installer only selcts one drive we handle partition via script I need to modify that

And release a new iso

There are some issues i identified aswell which I need to fix

Thank you for the feedback
