Introducing Shanios – Immutable OS Now Available for Testing!

Ive downloaded the new iso for testing. :upside_down_face:
its not working on virtual machine so i created a usb drive with isoimagewriter.
After boot the usb my Asus rog strix logo comes up with shani logo and a rolling circle.
then a grey display where i can choose the installer.i took the installer without nomodset. It started the installer and the asked Keyboard layout didnt work for me even if i take uk or irish keyboard.(i have the @ next to the enter button not on shift+2.On the Harddrive selection it found my ssd but dont find my free partitioned 40GB but anyway it says i need 64 GB so i did again a 70gb free partition not found in the installer.also cant not manually change my partitions.so far my experiences with it…
(close the installer ive got a blank black screen pressed ctrl+alt+T to open terminal and reboot)
more later …

Which graphics card?

Keyboard layout is set to us by default

I have no found a way yet to disable partition showing up for installation in installer

This has to be used with whole disk option.

i have a integrated one in the cpu only AMD because my R9 390 nitro broke its short my pc off.

i found the manager for the disk managment. now it has 70gb and 600mb fat for efi.installation aborted failed to write efi.

so i need a full free sdd for test?

Thepartition 1 is assumed to be efi

I need to disable custom partition

It has to be full disk

The ShaniOS download constantly and abruptly aborts with this message:

signed_shanios-plasma-2025.05.02-x86_64.iso
Error - Network error

My LTE router fluctuates between: min. 1.5 GB/s, max. 3.5 GB/s.
This should be sufficient for a successful download, even if it takes an hour.

This is the new iso try this

Using Ventoy and normal boot, it endlessly tried to boot…but never got off the plymouth screen.

Don’t use ventoy
Use dd
Use tools like isoimagewriter
Etcher

I like ventoy’s convenience, I don’t have to wipe an entire stick to use it. This is a design defect (imo), though your opinion may differ. Just saying.
Since I’m not really looking for a new distro, I probably won’t bother, due to convenience factor.

The download was quite quick.

There are problems with Ventoy: in normal mode, no drive appears to be present, and with Grub2, the kernel panics.

This isn’t a request; I’ll find the error on my own (sooner or later).

EDIT: just read:

Unfortunately, no luck. Neither with Suse nor with KDE ImageWriter.

But I’m far from giving up!

The install is actually pretty quick too (surprised). (yes, in the wee hours I was bored enough to ‘dd’ all over a USB stick).

I’m on Garuda-Xfce and installed both version of Shanios in KVM-Qemu without problems. Will see which version I like most, Gnome or KDE. So far every system runs without problems smooth and it is for me very intuitive; had to learn that upgrades can not be done with sudo but as root: shani-deploy. I even have access to filen.io cloud service with the appimage and it gives mi no problem.
Will test it further if I’m willing to switch to immutability. What I like about Garuda are the well established help files like garuda chroot and their implementation of snapper snapshots. Twice I had to use garuda chroot to revive my system and both times I was very glad that I could reestablish my system with minimal effort. The first time I messed up my config files and the second time I made an error with efibootmgr. In this regard I think the garuda team for a very polished integration of their files.
What will I do on shanios if I ever again mess up my configs, reboot back to green ??
Will report back how it goes for me. For now I think it’s a job very well done by the developer. I tried other immutables before but this implementation convinces me the most. Thank you for your efforts. :ok_hand:

@librewish Any plans to make updates and software management easily doable in a GUI? This seems like a great system for people who don’t know how or want to learn how to mess with their system, other than that one thing. (I’ve yet to find a distro I would recommend to every newbie, and that’s a must have)

Shani-update is the gui in making you can try it

Yesterday I tried to install shanios plasma on bare metal, Dell Optiplex 7050sff with i5 and WD Nvme, but did not succeed to complete installation, today I tried the gnome-version and could not get further than keyboard choice. At least for me it looks like the installer is not complete. Might try again in a few weeks. I liked the concept which I have seen in Qemu/KVM on Garuda-Xfce.
