Hello, I’m new here. I want to install Garuda linux (currently running win11 pro). i want to know if it is compatible with Laptop that is equiped with Amd processor.
I have an old laptop with exactly those specs and Garuda Dr460nized still works just fine there.
Actually I don’t use it anymore, but only due to a keyboard failure.
Of course you cannot expect it to be a “monster” , but for browsing, streaming TV watching and LibreOffice home stuff was fine.
No gaming of course, and also virtual machines can be given little resources, so a VM for Windows was impossible, but dual booting was Ok.
thank you Mr.Filo. Linux is good for both latest pcs and old pcs though. i tried other linux distros such as mint, Ubuntu and regataOS which is designed for gaming. I want to give some time for Garuda for gaming and browsing. but i’m not familar with terminal. and i don’t know how to remove temporary files, junk file like in windows 10/11.
you can certainly run windows and android apps on linux in general - but you should check about specific apps you want to use because there might be apps which won’t run at all or not run well - I recommend you use Bottles or Wine for windows apps. About the question of if your laptop is compatible with garuda linux - in terms of specs it will run fine, the minimum requirements for running garuda linux are mentioned on the download page. Good luck and I hope you will enjoy Garuda!
You can and should boot a live version and check and see how it runs.
I’m running Garuda-XFCE on a 15 year old Pentium with 4gb RAM, works great as a general laptop.
Welcome to both of you
I use Octopi to find the package name, then use the terminal to install, be aware the S is capital. Sometime the package is in AUR so the you will need to use yay to install.
As @cybertheworm says, use Live mode to find out how easy or difficult it is to use Linux Garuda. I mean, you have to use the pendrive with the Garuda iso of your choice, without using the install option, I think to log in the user/password is garuda/garuda, but make sure in the wiki.
On the other hand to install packages you can use pacseek, which a lot of people around here use if you are not confident with the command line.
I’m currently using Windows11. its been 1year and a half since i used linux distro (Regata Os) for gaming. i switched to windows because i dont know how to run android emulator and how to deal with terminal and packages and other things.
garuda is based on arch. So pacman on terminal is the way to install/remove things.
garuda-update to update system. recommend it once a week.
If you reach a point where official arch repo’s and chaotic-aur (garuda’s hosted repo) are not enough you can download stuff from AUR as well using paru. Though its generally safe but still be careful with AUR since the software on it is maintained by community.
Yes, it should run Garuda. I would encourage a cheap upgrade to 16gb memory if possible–just for the sake of making web browsing easier, but you can survive with 8. It would also probably be a good idea to pick XFCE.
i have no issues with my SSD `s or nvme they work well since few years If you mean confuguration like msoft you have to disable services to speed up the system , thats not on Garuda linux or Arch based linux systems to do. I did on a friends computer install garuda xfce beside is windows 10 and garuda runs 4 times faster. my friend didnt belive it but actually yeah he got a SSD too and more ram and he like it
