Hazards of a rolling distro

Well here we are, right back where we started at the beginning of this thread.

I love Garuda, and that mostly goes for any Arch based distro as well. Truth to tell though, I would never recommend a rolling distro like an Arch based one for non technically inclined newbs.

Arch based distro’s require maintenance. They are not set and forget. Anybody can install Garuda on a computer. That’s pretty simple in this day and age. The problem isn’t in the installing, it’s in learning to upkeep your system.

If you are going to run an Arch based distro for the long term then you need to learn how to maintain it properly. People with no desire to learn technical aspects of the OS probably shouldn’t pick an Arch based daily driver.

Anyone that enjoys tinkering with their system will love a rolling distro based on Arch. For the set and forget crowd they should run a static distro.

Not being an elitist, just a realist. Just my opinion.

This has created endless turmoil this week all because of an update to pacman6. This requires merging a pacnew file as routine system maintenance to ensure you can update your system properly. This has caused so many posts on this topic that I’ve lost count, and the posts just keep on coming.

And yet people are still burying their heads in the sand and refusing to merge the required pacman.conf.pacnew file to allow the system to be update properly again. Some obviously think this problem is going to resolve itself. Newsflash, it won’t. You need to get your hands dirty and learn how to merge your pacnew files. There’s no shortage of posts on this subject on the forum, it’s time to learn how to merge your pacnew files.

People, if you’re unwilling to learn how to merge a pacnew file then it’s probably time to admit you’re not up for using an Arch based distro. This must be done if you want your system to function properly. You can’t put this off forever, it’s time to break down and learn how this is done.

Use this update hiccup as a learning experience to discover how merging pacnew files works with Arch Linux based distros. You should also familiarize yourself with using pacman in the terminal.

I personally feel if you are unwilling to learn how to merge pacnew files or update your system from the terminal you should probably migrate to another distro.

Arch based systems are not self maintaining. Learning these maintenance skills is essential IMO. If you are unwilling to learn how to maintain your system properly (or occasionally use the terminal), then an Arch based system probably isn’t for you.
