Grub Boots to Emergency Mode

Apologies for any bad formatting; first post

After a bios update my Garuda install is no longer detected. Fast boot and secure boot are both disabled. I followed this guide to reinstall grub but it results in:

error: invalid volume.
error: invalid volume.
error: invalid volume.
Installation finished. No error reported.

then I ran update-grub:

Reboot and Garuda loads into emergency mode.

I am also dual booting Windows (separate drive) and that is now no longer detected in bios or grub. The Windows drive is not detected by lsblk either
Garuda Boot Repair did not work either.

Any help is appreciated!

edit: The windows drive is still accessible in dolphin

Welcome

Thats why Garuda not support dual boot with M$

Post log include command from

efibootmgr
lsblk
sudo blkid
garuda-inxi

as text. Use live ISO.

Same here, what command you used? Full log needed

Try also chroot from Garuda Welcome App, maybe it's too late?

Since you are able to chroot, the first thing I'd try is to recheck carefully your /etc/fstab.
I'd also try setting temporarily GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true in /etc/default/grub and update-grub again.
Edit: probably you can do all the above also from the emergency mode....

Using chroot from Garuda Welcome gives a few invalid volume errors at first but is able to chroot

@filo disabling the OS prober results in a nearly identical result output but again still finishes, still boots to emergency mode

Sorry, I copied it here.

I cannot really understand where the problem could come from.
As said, check your /etc/fstab maybe there is something old left, or something has changed...

fstab seems to be fine based off what I've found online, though I'm relatively new to linux and don't quite know what to look for; I've never checked fstab before

Fstab seems ok. I assume the uuids did not change for a BIOS update.
I'm sorry but I really don't understand what's going on... :pensive:
Maybe it was a wrong BIOS update. Have you searched at your manufacturer site, forum, etc.
Maybe it is in relation to that strange LDM data partition.
Just a curiosity.

Can you see Garuda from BIOS?
Finally, it could very unlikely be that we're searching in the wrong place and, instead of reinstalling the GRUB, you could try a garuda-update from inside the chroot.
It could have been a bad update or maybe you still needed a fix we implemented in Garuda migrations a few weeks ago.

Thanks for all your help so far!

Garuda is visible from bios, though, when booting, grub is very laggy with ~1 second delayed inputs, visible display refreshing, takes a lot longer to "boot" and pressing esc to view boot log doesn't work.

A bad bios update seems unlikely, the updates been out since March so it should be fine and normally updates for different model boards would error out before applying though I will look into it tomorrow.
My last update was a few days before the bios update, but I'll try that too.

Also, I was mistaken as windows is still viable in lsblk. After the bios update garuda wasn't visible in bios but windows was. After updating grub windows disappeared from bios & grub.

Could you try grub-install like before, but with --verbose? Maybe this helps finding out more about the invalid volume errors.

I didnt change anything but chroot from Garuda Welcome no longer as invalid volume errors

Running garuda-update had the same invalid volume errors when updating grub, and there were a few errors for other things

Rebooting and grub is still in emergency mode but the bios boot menu has a new grub option

Something to note is that Garuda is installed on my Samsung 970, not the 850, and before the bios update it said the correct drive, but lsblk lists the only vfat partition as on the 850

Is it possible for me to just reinstall and move my home directory?

@UltraBlack --verbose didn't seem to tell me any useful information other than adding relocation entries and occasionally writing bytes

"Fixed" the issue by reinstalling Garuda and moving my old home directory using this guide, marking as solved
