Well - it can handle MBR, but I agree it is not optimized for that! Usually the MBR capability is for picking up Windows that are lying around on a machine - which are unpredictable as to how they were installed in certain years...

That is is purpose. However, many systems have SOME EFI capabilities (even if poorly implemented), even though they are shipped without them being in use - on these sorts of systems, rEFInd can work - but not easily and not likely worth the effort to even find out! If there is any reference to CSM or Legacy in your rmanuals or BIOS, you might well have this kind of system - *IF you care! It doesn't sound like an option to pursue...
