Black screen when signing into X11 KDE session

I have the same problem.

Been trying to fix for 3 days.

Obviously reluctant to post as I will be told it all my fault…

“Obviously reluctant to post as I will be told it all my fault…” A-I don’t think it would be your fault and B-I don’t think anyone will tell you that, this is a noob friendly forum from what I seen not the Arch Linux community, so yeah you can ask for help as long as you follow the basic instructions provided, but have you tried the fix the person above provided?

Yes, i followed the above, just how you described, but when i log in its a black screen with terminal…

Hm, for me I didn’t even have anything aside from a blackscreen, are you sure you have X11 as a session available and selected from the log-in menu?

Edit: I know it seems stupid but I am asking in-case the session selected is bugged for you and didn’t actually select X11 correctly

I understand. I can select X11 or Wayland at logon , the option is there.

i have installed plasma-x11-session.

I was not responding to you in particular, but catching up on your issue now. You have a different issue than the original poster, I’ll split it into a separate post.

Have you tried logging in via the Wayland session?

yes - it was even slower to load and the same problem was persistent

What’s the exact problem you’re having? Also, without a garuda-inxi output, it’ll be impossible to diagnose your issue. You’ll probably have to use a TTY to get it.

when i log in, the garuda dragon spins, then i get a black DE, no menu, no task basrs , but i can see the garuda welcome, from which i can choose update, it opens a terminal window, i can right click on that and open dolphin, i can load apps from the terminal - all works.
the DE is broken ,surely this is a plasma issue>?

Can you use that trick to start a terminal and then run startplasma-x11 and post any potential output you might get?

ok, will report back.

from terminal :

─stamina@staminstrix in ~ took 3s
╰─λ startplasma-x11
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion

on screen GUI ; had box with header of xmessage with text of :plasma seems to be already running on this display

When was the last time you have updated your system before this update that broke it?

If I had to guess, resetting the theme will probably fix this issue.

You can run /usr/lib/garuda-system-maintenance/migrate-dr460nized true to do this.

i update every few days, if not its weekly at most. It broke when I updated on Saturday night, 3 days ago, destroying my installation and my planned gaming session for the weekend…

I will try your suggestion, keep them coming, as I have already tried everything I can find…

Let me know when you’ve tried it. Thank you!

What happens if you try to run plasmashell in a terminal instead?

╭─stamina@staminstrix in ~ as :mage: took 10s
╰─λ plasmashell
starting invalid corona “org.kde.plasma.desktop”

And it just gets stuck there?
