Black screen when signing into X11 KDE session

check here

i deleted that file, restarting now…BTW that file was dated 21/6 - the day all this problem began!!

I guess we really ought to make a full KDE reset script at some point if this fixes it.

nope no dice…

Ok so what I don’t like right now is that supposedly your plasma is failing to start according to systemd, but then you’re telling me plasma starts just fine from the terminal. That’s obviously nonsensical.

I need you to run this:

systemctl --user stop plasma-plasmashell.service; killall -9 plasmashell; plasmashell; echo done

and then send the full output here.

─stamina@staminstrix in /home🔒
╰─λ systemctl --user stop plasma-plasmashell.service; killall -9 plasmashell; plasmashell; echo done
plasmashell: no process found

I see, okay!

Can you run garuda-update remote fullfix?
This will reinstall all packages on the system and also reset pacman.conf (for your info).

If that doesn’t work after a reboot, we will have to delete all plasma configs probably…

i already tried re-installing all packages and resetting all configs on sunday.

i will do this again though - I will report straight back.

==> root: 805
(58/58) Syncing all file systems...
Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.Notifications: Timeout was reached

rebooting now, just noticed this line at the end though…

Is it AMD? And maybe this issue?

AMD cpu , nvidia GPU

I did read that thread - but it was an AMD gpu (I actually tried it anyway earlier, but it didnt work… i thoughth it might have effected the igpu somehow…)

I rebooted again after that change -same problem.

how do i remove all the config files for plasma?

got this from AI

Invalid Corona org.kde.plasma.desktop
The error message "starting invalid corona 'org.kde.plasma.desktop'" typically indicates an issue with the KDE Plasma Desktop configuration or installation. This error has been reported in several contexts, including Arch Linux and Kubuntu environments.
Users have encountered this error after system updates, leading to issues where the Plasma Desktop fails to start properly, resulting in a black background with functional windows but no desktop environment.

Several solutions have been suggested by users facing this issue. Reinstalling Plasma-related packages such as plasma-desktop, plasma-workspace, and plasma-framework has been recommended as a potential fix.
Additionally, checking for and resolving any issues with the XDG_RUNTIME_DIR environment variable, which is responsible for setting the runtime directory for user sessions, might help.

In some cases, the error could be related to the theme used by the Plasma Desktop. The message suggests that the theme "Colorful-Dark-Plasma" uses the legacy metadata.desktop format, which might not be compatible with the current version of Plasma.
Contacting the theme author to request an update to the newer JSON format could resolve this issue.

If the problem persists, it might be necessary to check the system logs for more detailed error messages, which can provide clues about what is causing the Plasma Desktop to fail to start. For example, errors related to the activity manager daemon (kactivitymanagerd) not running or issues with the D-Bus services directory might be relevant.

For the latest KDE 6.4 they split Wayland and X11.

try looking here. I had to do that to get my X11 back

yes, sorry i missed your post earlier.

Okay well, let’s try this:

Make a new user account from within the KDE settings menu and give it Administrator permissions and then log into that user account. Does Plasma work as intended when you do that?

so i found this thread whilst siting here on this problem…

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/658772/unable-to-start-plasmashell-in-arch-linux

and i tried the command sudo pacman -S plasma-desktop plasma-workspace

and rebooted - I now have a working DE…

I had previously created a new user and it didn’t solve the problem.

The problem I have now is that the whole laptop is freezing now, I am writing this from another PC. I believe downgrades are necessary for the NVIDIA drivers and will be trying that next.

This just… Seems wrong…
Why would that EVER be uninstalled?

Also, your package list doesn’t show a single Nvidia driver actually installed while your inxi shows that you have one???

This is a Frankenstein system, I don’t even know what happened to this poor thing.

Go ahead and install an Nvidia driver properly please:

mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300

the reason it is like that is because the current Nvidia driver 575.64.1-1 borks systems with my hardaware . there are threads about it.

i have be trying to downgrade the nvidia packages to get the laptop to work.

this is why i posted what you see above.

the mhwd driver is the one i need to downgrade, here is the latest -inxi - the one posted above is older..

Again, you don’t have any Nvidia driver installed according to your output.

mhwd-nvidia is NOT a driver.

Have you tried installing nvidia-open-dkms instead of nvidia-dkms? Your GPU is supported by nvidia-open. NVIDIA Transitions Fully Towards Open-Source GPU Kernel Modules | NVIDIA Technical Blog
