AMD Radeon RX 9070 Freezes

Hello :slight_smile:

here and there I have freezes with my AMD Radeon RX 9070.

Now I have look after a freez in journalctl.

I made all 1-2 days updates, and the freezes can come ingame or on the desktop. Any Ideas to limit the possibility of the fail?

The journactl is to high for my IT-knowledge. :smiley:

Are you able to check if it is a CPU bottleneck?

Hmm.. Is there a specific log? I have only opened a twitch stream via Firefox your Forum and another Browser side. So no heavy things. In Games, where I had this, that was Mechabellum or Magic The Gathering. So no big title. This is a 3900x from AMD. So a CPU bottleneck with this programs where weird.

Might be able to switch between system monitor and the application when it freezes; to get an idea what is happening; can also try troubleshooting steps such as going offline etc.

I had it now, it freeze all 3 monitors completly. No mouse but sound. After 10-30 sec. it is back. Sometimes, I had to reload the twitch stream because of Error I think it was #1000

Tried running a hardware GPU test? GPU could be overheating as well.

That was only in a game. And the freeze was in Idle. So, I would say, that the temps are ok.

In an older Thread on reddit few people solved freezes by adding 2 kernel parameters. Have a look here.

I would definitely disable splitlock, I have it personally disabled cause it was spamming the logs like crazy mostly when running steam games.

Also those graphs you show looks like from LACT?
Did you do any undervolt or OC?

It was not the answer. I had a freeze a now…

@Seimus The graphs are LACT. I don’t do any OC or undervolt. But I wanted a software to see temperture, clocks and so on. I wanted to know how full the VRAM is.

Thanky you for your advice. I thought I have all installed. I’m new to the AMD Drivers for graficcards. I have changed from Nvidia 1070 to AMD now. Maybe I forgot something, or didn’t know, that is more.
We will see. If it freeze, I try the link.

Install the vulkan-headers if not installed (my mind)
Through the step replace mhwd to modern garuda linux hardware profile, the system uninstalled this on my system.
(my system ran into trouble when gitlab update packages were deployed after this
example was plasma6-wallpapers-blurredwallpaper-git , not important for the system, of course)

The vulkan-headers are installed.

I mean your card is now not dri 0 after this switch.
Pls look inside /dev/dri/
if it not looks like this (card0 must be your amd gpu)


then you must insert in the kernel boot parameters this:
blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init over “garuda boot optionen”

only one gpu and this is not dri 0…the system can run in trouble. (my mind)

For clarify. Do I need “card0”, or is “card1” also good. I don’t know what you mean with dri0. I cannot open card1 to verify this is the AMD GPU. But I would say so. Or is there maybe something left from NVIDIA? Sry for the question. :smiley:

No..it`s not good…
card0 it must be.
Insert the blacklist simple drm → reboot → test → result = ?
Default sience kernel 4.xxx is the simple drm modul enabled. No prob if you install the system. But if you change then the gpu that could be the result. With a kernel update that should switch then to card0. But on my system..not.
First uninstall the driver (nvidia) → shutdown → insert new gpu → then install the stuff for the new gpu.
The system and apps “looking” default to card0 not card1.
But if this really solved your issue, not shure.
It could be that you have a “faulty” gpu.

That I’ve done.
Nvidia GPU was there. I have uninstall all NVIDIA drivers, shutdown, insert the GPU and then install all drivers for the new GPU.
