AMD GPU fans not working on startup

Hey. I’m trying to get the fans on my AMD RX 7600XT to spin after booting into Garuda and so far, nothing has really worked. I tried ‘amdgpu-fan’ and ‘amdfand’ from the arch wiki and I’ve done everything i could see, but no fan spin whatsoever. I don’t know if I’m missing something or what, but if anyone can help me with this and tell me what to do in an easy step-by-step manner, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Hello and welcome, this is not a issue as long as they spin up during gameplay. A lot of gpu’s including my own have a zero rpm mode at idle and the fans won’t spin until temps rise like when playing a game. This is a good thing overall as it extends the life of the fans in your gpu by only using them when needed. You will find the fans kick on during game play and then shut off again after sometime when your done playing your game. Hope this helps

I can’t speak to your RX 7600, but my RX6900 does the same.

I can (but don’t) control the GPU fan with Fancontrol-GUI, so that’s one to look at if you want to run the fan for some reason.

CoreCtrl is another good util for AMD hardware tuning.

I’ve looked at the fans when playing games and they don’t spin at all. I just booted up Cyberpunk 2077 to see if they spin up at all, and nothing.

If your fans are not spinning while playing demanding games then i would say its a hardware issue and not software. Does it do the same on windows?

pssst:

No, i was using an Nvidia GPU when i was running my windows PC.

Yeah, i know. Any idea how i can get it to work?

As @dawe has mentioned, try Corectrl - it can be easily installed from Garuda Gamer. You can control the graphics card fan curve there, though, I am not sure if it can restart the mentioned amdgpu-fan.service.

Start with:

sudo systemctl start amdgpu-fan.service

and enable to start automatically:

sudo systemctl enable amdgpu-fan.service

reboot.

I did exactly that and still no spin. This makes ZERO sense to me. The card works OOTB with Garuda, display is working perfectly fine, no driver issues at all. Yet this is making me want to bash my head into the wall. Guess i should be glad i have my RTX 3060 12GB as a back up plan then

can you check sensors for that card, i mean temp and usage? when you are playing any game what are the temps? have you maybe set up something in software? like fan control curve?

Did you get an error message when you start the service with

sudo systemctl start amdgpu-fan.service

?

Post the output from

systemctl status amdgpu-fan.service

Does the card have dual BIOS that you can switch?
Does the card have a switch for zero rpm mode?

As for temps when i played Cyberpunk 2077 last night, the temps got up to about low to mid 40’s and no, i don’t have anything set up in software.

That was what i got. I’m trying to find if my card has dual bios switch

Low to mid 40s probably isn’t warm enough to need the fan. I don’t think mine kicks on until it’s north of 50 C.

I agree with @dawe.

Try resetting with:

sudo systemctl reset-failed amdgpu-fan.service

and start the service again:

sudo systemctl start amdgpu-fan.service

I do not have amdgpu-fan.service installed, but I have tried Corectrl:

I tried tried several settings and applying them, fan stayed at 0 rpm.

Yes. OP should confirm that under load, the temps rise to 60 - 70 deg C.

If your fans are not working at these temps you have an issue. With just passive cooling (no fans) your GPU should ramp up to 70… 80 deg C quite rapidly ( minute or two.)

Many of the modern coolers are super effective.

My RX runs super quiet too… rarely spins up and makes noise.

As mentioned before. Use corectrl to monitor your temps and see whats going on.

Theory confirmed, at least in my case. My beefy cooler did indeed soak up most of the heat. I have fired up a game, budged the in-game limit from 60 fps to 120 fps, then after 10 minutes, alt-tabbed out into Corectrl. Fans were not impressed, but did move a bit

Still, the card has 3x fans, but the sensor is showing only one.
