Zephyrus 15 Duo - Sound works, but speakers don't change volume

I am making an attempt to install linux on my Asus Zephyrus 15 Duo (2021) laptop. I should note that I have tried Pop_OS before Garuda, but overall, Garuda has given the best out-of-box experience hands down.

Anyways, in both installs, I have hit a common problem (and they both have pipewire) - Sound works and comes out just fine. Volume sliders change in every tool (system audio, alsamixer, pavucontrol and etc) and even through the keyboard shortcuts. HOWEVER, the actual volume coming out of the speakers remains exactly the same with no change.

Does anyone have any idea what could be happening and how to fix?

Also to note, the Poly headset (USB) works just fine in both volume control and actual speaker/headset output.

Hi there, welcome to the forum.
Just as a sanity check, you should update this.

Thanks for the response. I have now updated it (see below), but the problem does persist.

I found a solution. What a journey. :slight_smile:

Basically, I believe it has something to do with this:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PulseAudio/Examples#Independent_analog_and_digital_outputs_on_the_same_card

(I am hearing this might be pretty common for vendors to do this now? Don’t know)

With that said, I didn’t do the fixes in that documentation, because before finding that, I found this:

Note, you have to heed the warning in the first link to find the updated configuration/profiles path because the second link is outdated with that path.

So here is the updated fix…

  1. Open this file up in your favorite text editor as root/sudo:
    /usr/share/alsa-card-profile/mixer/paths/analog-output.conf.common
  2. Search for “Element PCM”
  3. Make a new line ABOVE this one and add the following:
    [Element Master]
    switch = mute
    volume = ignore

  4. Reboot and test and it should work

NOTE: If you are like me and were messing with your alsamixer, you may want to go into it and turn the Master and Speaker settings to 100%. The reason for this, is because if you don’t, then you will not get a clear sound (like the treble is low). Don’t worry, if you change your system volume, you will notice it is the PCM that changes actually.

Finally, to add to this… this does not appear to be a Garuda/Arch related problem, but a general pulseaudio(?) related issue. I tried Debian based, Arch based and even Fedora based and they all had the same behavior.
