"You're Not the Owner" Error When Launching a Game After Installation

Hey everyone,

I’ve recently run into a frustrating issue that I can’t seem to fix. After downloading and installing a game on my Linux system (Garuda Dragonized Gaming Edition), everything seems fine during the installation process. But when I try to launch the game — whether it’s from Steam, Heroic Launcher, or directly from a .desktop shortcut — I get this error:

“You’re not the owner of this file” or something similar that prevents the game from launching at all.

I checked the permissions and it seems like the files might be owned by root or another user, even though I’m the one who installed them. I tried giving myself permissions using chown, but that didn’t fully solve the problem.

So now I’m stuck.

  • pls with current garuda-inxi

pls more info

  • which game and from which source ?
  • where is it installed?

first i will tell you my laptop specs i use asus tuf f15 with i5 12500h and rtx 3050 4gb vram and 8 gb ram
i downloaded all the dependencies of wine and winetricks and proton GE 9.0.4
i downloaded heroic game launcher to use epic games and downloaded steam native to test games out not big ones but small indie ones
from heroic i downloaded celeste in this directory /home/krx/Games/Heroic/Celeste/
i am fairly new to arch linux and never tried to game on it before

pls post your garuda-inxi..“we” can´t really help without
How: open konsole
post the FULL output of garuda-inxi in the body of the post (not linked externally, or collapsed with the “hide details” feature)

  • Format terminal output (including your garuda-inxi) as a code block by clicking the preformatted text button (</>), or put three tildes (~) above and below the text

or open rani → tab diagnostics → common info (inxi)

in advance: wrong nvidia driver
You have to deinstall your current nvidia driver then to install the right driver
to deinstall: open konsole command

sudo pacman -Rdd garuda-nvidia-config nvidia-dkms nvidia-settings nvidia-utils opencl-nvidia libxnvctrl lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia gwe python-py3nvml

then install (no reboot + type yes for all dependence, when “asked”):

sudo pacman -S nvidia-open-dkms egl-wayland lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-opencl-nvidia nvidia-settings opencl-nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-prime`

reboot → pls post then current garuda-inxi + pacman -Qs nvidia

but pls make before a update from the system:
open konsole command: garuda-update -a or use rani for the update → reboot
then uninstall + install
to be safe:
think on right settings inside bios and os

  • ahci/uefi mode + secure + fast boot off
  • if winstupid is installed: fastboot disable

Never a “warmboot” from Win to Linux, reverse yes.

That looks better.. :+1:
Now your issue with the game.
You have downloaded “celeste”…but sorry, not so good idea.
Pls open octopi → click on the green “alien” icon and insert in the search celeste.
Octopi then looks in the “chaotic aur” source
You find it there. (my mind)
To play this game… delete the folder “Celeste”

then open konosle command:
paru -S celeste-bin (if this is the game version what you need)
press then q and say yes to all → result should be that you can run the game without “problems” (my mind)

Another issue,

How is your home ntfs? tbh that should not work. you will get nothing but permission errors and games will pretty much never work from it.
I’m not sure what happened during your install but id guess you changed your home location after install. the /home or your game folder can not be ntfs. You can try and make it work but it will always come back to bite you.

did not read… yes..that’s right.
No user-rights are possible and that’s why you can’t start the game without errors.
But not only this
To play this game you need “fmod” packages if you have downloaded the celesteXX.7z and
“only” unzip the source and then ./Celeste isn`t enough. (tested inside my vm)
╭─gampel@garudacomp in ~/Downloads/celeste/Celeste_(v1.4.0.0)_[Linux]
:ten_o_clock: 16:40:04

╰─λ ./Celeste

Linux is not designed to run on NTFS partitions. Do yourself a favor, if you’re not using Windows, then jettison all NTFS partitions ASAP. Unless you delight in creating problems for yourself, be sure to format your drives in a Linux native format such as BTRFS or ext4.
