Wineboot stalls on creating new wine prefixes

When setting up a new wineprefix, wineboot takes forever and eventually stalls out. Applications will not load from prefixes created with system wine. Proton seems to work via steam, but things that don't go through steam don't seem to load. I get errors that seem to indicate kernel32 is missing but I've confirmed it is present in prefix c:\windows\system32.dll and has a file size.

Hi there, welcome.
Maybe check if any of the solutions mentioned here help. Just a quick search, I have no idea if this is exactly your issue.

Are you using Lutris?

Thanks filo, that did help a lot. I searched google and couldn't find anything based on my error but that post you linked led me to PSA: Prefix creation hanging issues · Issue #396 · Frogging-Family/wine-tkg-git · GitHub which said to uninstall gst-editing-services. I uninstalled that and pitivi, which depended on it. It does look like that worked to solve wineboot failing to load. The applications still aren't working but I'll try to check around a bit more on that now that it isn't getting stuck setting up the prefix.
