Windows Game crashes instantly after Update

Hey everyone,

Ive been having problems starting Cyberpunk since the new update on 12/18/2023. A window would pop up for a second and then close. I did some testing and it looks like the vulkan-pkgs are causing the problem. It works fine after a downgrade of the vulkan-pkgs. Maybe it works with other Windows Game issues too.

Just wanted to post this here in case anyone else is having the same issue.

I do update every morning, after today’s update all games stop launching from steam and heroic launchers

I did use snapper to roll back

I’ve got this as well and it is definitely related to the vulkan/mesa update. If you run vulcaninfo it instantly crashes with the following error:
'vulkaninfo' terminated by signal SIGSEGV (Address boundary error).

Games crash when they try to check the capabilities of your GPU. This is the error i pulled out of the lutris logs, steam had similar errors pointing to the same file.
Assertion failed: !status && "vkGetPhysicalDeviceSurfaceCapabilitiesKHR", file ../dlls/winevulkan/loader_thunks.c

I downgraded the vulkan packages and it worked again. Unfortunately i didn’t note much down during my attempts at fixing it yesterday as i was planning to properly dig into it during the weekend.

Garuda-inxi taken without the vulkan update:

Hi there,

I’ve got the exact same issue after the mesa/vulkan upgrade, with the same error when launching any game :

Assertion failed: !status && "vkGetPhysicalDeviceSurfaceSupportKHR", file ../src-wine/dlls/winevulkan/loader_thunks.c, line 4964

EDIT: For me, downgrading only the package vulkan-radeon using below command seems to fix the issue.
sudo pacman -U file:///var/cache/pacman/pkg/vulkan-radeon-1:23.2.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Same issue on my side.
Only roll-back with snapper tools helped.

I’m also having this issue ;-;

I see it’s not a specific hardware issue, as I’m running a Nvidia card and most other people I see with this issue have AMD cards.

I’ll try downgrading vulkan see if that helps ^~^

Thank you @Azerist your command helped to resolve my issue with not working warframe and jagged alliance3

Ok, suddenly it worked on my end.

I ran the update without vulkan-radeon and lib32-vulkan-radeon which still caused it to break. I then installed those two as well and ran systemctl --user daemon-reload when prompted after the update and it worked properly. Vulcaninfo doesn’t crash anymore and games work normally.

I did read some post about something like this while searching around that mentioned mkinitcpio, which was updated today, so perhaps that did it?

Edit: It was vulkan-icd-loader. Its been updated and that was most likely what solved it for me.

Not 100% sure but i think garuda doesn’t use mkinitpcio

couldn’t end up fixing it my end

had to rollback to a pre update snapshot

In my case helped solution from arch forum:
“export VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json”

source

But I just updated system and package “vulkan-icd-loader” got updated and now all is working again.

I can confirm this is working for me, the issue was definitely with vulkan-icd-loader.

It is now updated to v1.3.274-1 vulkan-icd-loader - Arch Linux Packages. I think everyone should be safe to re-update now ^~^

Older installs might still be running that if they haven’t switched. You can check if you are using it or not by examining your “Relevent software” part of garuda-inxi (it’s near the end).
Example:

Relevant software: snapper NetworkManager dracut

New ISO installations use dracut by default.

Seems to be fixed indeed, i just ran a full upgrade and everything works.

So I click on the Updates systray icon, see the list of Updates given, even click Refresh, but this thing still reads 1.3.269-1 -> 1.3.273-1 (ie. the broken version rather than the mentioned-by-you fix version). This is already on a new day, new reboot freshness. What else but “Refresh” need one do to see that?

Sounds like some mirrors still need time to catch up then.
Depending on what you are checking it with (since wasn’t mentioned what exactly you are checking that with), I would check with the garuda-update command in terminal and see if the version is ready to download there.
