I should just start by saying that since I have switched to Garuda from windows I have been exceptionally pleased with all most everything. I thought that using Linux would be a much bigger deal with a high learning curve and I think the team has really nailed the user experience and managed the line between technical know how and ease of use, loving it.
But, I have not been able to find a good CAD software, I know there is Freecad but I’m not really into parametric modeling. If I need it I will use it because its great for complex projects with revision and iteration changes as well as assemblies, but I would really rather have a quick direct modeling CAD for banging out small, simple models.
I’ve poked around the web and not found anything that I really liked or found useful. I really like the flow and feel of Autodesk inventor and fusion 360.
So I’m turning to the community to see if there is something I missed, I really don’t want to have to maintain another machine with windows on it but I love 3D printing and making my own models. Maybe its just a gripe but Freecad just doesn’t fit my style or needs.
So do any of you know of a good direct modeling CAD?
@filo and @TilliDie Thanks for your suggestions and input.
@filo I did not know this list existed and it has a lot more than just cad software so Ill be sure to put it to good use, thanks. I like the looks of Qcad for architectural plans, reminds me of autodesk release 14.
@TilliDie I currently use freecad but I kinda hate parametric modeling, in the past I have used Pro E, autocad inventor, PTC’s ccreo elements. These are all direct modeling style cad which is very different from parametric modeling.
Blender is great for more of a sculpting and artistic type of work but is far more complicated than is needed for general technical modeling. I know these seem like gripes but its really disruptive to my work flow when I’m in the mood to work on project, I guess I’m just an old dog and I like my old tricks, lol.
I’m a CAD newbie. I tried FreeCAD and gave up. I ended up just using OnShape in a browser. The free version makes all your models public (i.e.: open source), but it’s easy to use.
I just got FreeCAD & I’m going to learn it by force by fire (this is how I learnt Lightworks back in my windows days which turns has one of the steepest learning curves for video editing).
im using FreeCad and Blender too otherwise i use online web tools if my parts are okay to be shared. Mostly FreeCad it isnt to hard to learn at all. Blender is a really good tool but to complicated as a beginner. Anyway we have good yt tutorials Have fun at CAD
