I did my weekly update today on my 3 Garuda machines this morning and now my sound is no longer working on any of them.

The desktop is connected to a soundbar with an optical cable from the soundcard build into the motherboard. The AMD HTPC is sending sound to the TV it’s connected to via a DP to HDMI adapter that is on the supported list for CEC controls. The Intel HTPC is using a bluetooth speaker.

After the update I tried to watch a video on the AMD HTPC in kodi, the UI sounds worked, but the video sounds didn’t, when I went to the sound settings the sound would sometimes play while the pop-up had focus, but sometimes I’d have to change the profile. But when I go back to kodi sound does not work. I tried with both the Linux-Zen kernel and the Linux-LTS kernel on the AMD HTPC, I also tried with both wayland and X11 on plasma, then I installed a minimal gnome desktop.

I then tried on my desktop and sound doesn’t work at all when the profile is set to digital stero output, I have a 2.1 channel sound bar, but it does work in most things with digital stero out + analog in. Kodi has the same problem where it only plays when the sound settings is active, but on the desktop it get’s some weird feedback, that stops about 15 seconds after kodi closes.

On the Intel HTPC it also has the same issue where there is no sound in kodi unless the sounds settings is active.

I tried using a snapshot to go back to a working system, but the systems hang on Starting Terminate Plymouth Boot Screen.

I’m at a loss for what to try next…

There was an update for Pipewire a few days back, maybe it had a regression. Try PulseAudio.

Switching to pulse gave me a device unavailable error, and swtiching back to pipewire said there was a corrupt package. Unfortunately redownloading the corrupt package didn’t fix anything :confused:

I did find a workaround, if I pin the Audio Volume popout the sound works :person_shrugging:

I have the same issue, two AMD systems, same behavior.

Why update all three machines at the same time? You are tripling your chances of encountering a serious bug that could potentially prevent booting or being able to login.

It would seem to make far more sense to update once per week on your least critical machine. After updating this one test machine always be sure to reboot to make sure there are no serious show stopping bugs.

After you’ve used your testing machine for a day and encountered no serious bugs, then proceed with updating your other machines. This simple update strategy could save you a lot of big headaches when a very serious bug makes it down the pipe. You can’t rely on a snapshot to always save your ass. Better safe than sorry I figure.

IDK, been doing this for a few years and not had anything like this happen before. I don’t really use sound on my main machine, so didn’t catch the bug before updating the others, and last time I had an issue the snapshots worked.

Well by that logic, why take precautions in the height of a pandemic. If you never got Covid bad before, I guess there’s nothing to worry about right? Sorry, but that seems like a rather poor mentality if one wants to remain heathy.

Same with a computer. Don’t do risky things and Linux is super safe. If you read the Arch forums daily, chances are a major bug will not catch you by surprise. Otherwise it pays to play it safe. Unless you are one of the rare individuals that backs up all data on all machines on at least an hourly basis, you should always be concerned about the potential for a catastrophic failure.

I guess if you have spent no time customizing your machine, and all you use it for is watching cat videos on YouTube, then why worry about anything. :smiley:

Why should I stick around when the garuda team insults me when I have an issue and the snapshots are broken so I can’t roll back to a working state?

I was not trying to insult you I just have a different sense of humour than most people.

Arch is a rolling distro, with that comes a certain amount of risk. The risk of potential breakagres when updating is offset by having access to all the latest and greatest software as it becomes available.

Some people are suited to a rolling distro and others are not.There’s nothing wrong with static distros, it’s just not my cup of tea. If you’re more suited to a static distro that’s fine. Use whatever you feel most comfortable with.

Garuda is pretty upfront about this. Snapshots are not a substitute for a comprehensive backup strategy. Backups save your butt, snapshots are a handy feature to have, (nothing more).

Please do not use a rolling release if you do not enjoy repairing your system, the benefits of the latest software go hand in hand with spontaneous problems of any kind.
I found the advice on how to prevent such problems very helpful.

Personally, I have at least two different DEs on my computers so that I can carry out repairs via chroot without having to do this via USB live ISO.
A good backup procedure of important data lets me sleep peacefully.

I’ve been running an arch based distro for over 10 years. I learned about gardua about 4 yeas ago and swtiched because of the built in snapshots. I understand the risks. It was a minor inconvenience on my main system, but a show stopper for the media PCs, the problem was resolved before anyone from the garuda team looked at this.

But it’s time for me to move to a system where the team doesn’t insult those who experience problems and ask for help.

All of my important stuff has a backup on my NAS and in the cloud.

No one will stop you.
What’s funny to some is a deadly insult to others.
You shouldn’t put that on the gold scale in an international forum. Especially since it was explained to you how it was meant.

I’m glad to hear you do regular backups that’s great. What I am failing to understand is why you are so upset that the snapshot feature let you down if you keep full system backups.

Snapshots are not a replacement for backups, Garuda has been saying this since day one. So, it’s really not the distros fault if a snapshot occasionally cannot restore a system as that’s just the nature of the beast. Snapshots are simply not 100% reliable.

I’m sorry if you’ve felt insulted by anything I’ve posted here, but I personally don’t feel I posted anything that was rude or antagonistic in any way. I guess we will simply have to agree to disagree if that’s how you feel about it.

Arch is the king of distros, so you can never go wrong there if that’s what you’d rather use. Best of luck with whatever you choose. :wave:

I was reporting an issue. Calling someone an antivaxxer for reporting an issue is mean, and when it’s coming from an official member of the team it comes across as them dismissing people actually have issues and that this is not a place to seek help. Then rather than actually apologizing for insulting me they just dismissed it as a joke.

The hard part of all this, is that I enjoy using garuda, it meets my needs. But I don’t want to support people who insult others for reporting issues and seeking help.

Now I am going to say something that could legitimately be taken as an insult if you so choose, because you seem to be looking a reason to be insulted. You need to get a thicker skin pal. If you are really so upset by my prior posts then I don’t know how you’ll make it through life with such over sensitivity issues. I come from a much earlier generation where men did not buckle so easily under the slightest bit of criticism and act like it was something so traumatic as to cause PTSD.
