VLC: Codec not supported

For some .mkv files, VLC just shoots with any of:

  • VLC could not decode the format "a52 " (A52 Audio (aka AC3))
  • VLC could not decode the format "eac3" (A/52 B Audio (aka E-AC3))

Seems they have no issues

I have searched through their forum and such errors were discussed for version 2.x, but long been fixed. Are there probably codecs missing? How do I re-install it but also clean up the config?

I use mpv, but conf files are often in ~/.config/
so maybe in ~/.config/vlc/

find -iname '*vlc*'

or pamac

Nope, deleteing the config dir doesn't help.
mpv works. I need to learn the shortcuts now

Strange. Today it magically works. And I have not installed any updates. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

And do you have those codecs installed?

We have

Please open a new help request, if still necessary, after you have worked through the template.

I just closed this five-year-old thread.
