For some .mkv files, VLC just shoots with any of:

I have searched through their forum and such errors were discussed for version 2.x, but long been fixed. Are there probably codecs missing? How do I re-install it but also clean up the config?
I use mpv, but conf files are often in ~/.config/
so maybe in ~/.config/vlc/
find -iname '*vlc*'
or pamac
Nope, deleteing the config dir doesn't help.
mpv works. I need to learn the shortcuts now 
Strange. Today it magically works. And I have not installed any updates. 
We still do not have an answer to this??
And do you have those codecs installed?
