Video performance inside the web browser seems kind of choppy and blurry and so far I only noticed that issue on Garuda Linux(Gamer Edition) and I tried on other distros on same hardware like Zorin OS (Gnome), EndeavourOS (XFCE) and even with Windows 10 I had better video performance in Browser and it felt smooth and sharp in all 3 OS’s except Garuda…
Does anyone have a clue why is this happening?
Is it because of KDE?
or Screen Compositor?
or something else?
Also I tried different browsers like Brave, Firedragon, Firefox and Google Chrome, but the problem mostly occurs on Garuda…

Maybe it has to do with hardware acceleration not being properly enabled? By the sound of 'blurry' video however, I doubt it - the question then becomes what kind of blurry we are talking about, low resolution or compositor-style blur? If it's the latter, have you tried disabling the compositor with alt+shift+F12
and playing the video, and seeing whether that changes anything? Have you also tried other video players like VLC and seeing if the issue persists?
I thought about cutting out what I put below since it's probably not relevant to your case, but it might help someone else out there who is pulling their hair out and going bald over video tearing.
Summary
While my issue was not the same as yours, I had an issue with Firedragon/Librewolf not having hardware acceleration enabled properly, resulting in tearing in the top quarter of the video. Ungoogled Chromium on the other hand had very smooth video from the get-go. I had to go to about:config
and set gfx.webrender.all
to true
, effectively forcing it.
If you want to try toubleshooting down this direction, take a look at VAAPI , h264ify or anything similar to it, and the Arch Wiki pages of whatever web browser you plan to regularly use.
This is a very uneducated guess though, which is why your garuda-inxi
is needed if you want an easy way to put it into the forum, go to Garuda Assistant -> system specs -> copy for forum, and replace the three backticks (`) with tildes (~).

And also I forgot to mention that the problem only occurs in Web Browsers not in VLC or SMP, And when it comes to blurry it's like compositor-style-blur, resolution is fine.

oh cool, did you try shift+alt+F12
to disable the compositor and see whether video playback improves? Not to say it's a long-term solution of course but it'll help to get to the heart of the matter. As Anarcraft mentioned, if JamesDSP is running, try quitting it and seeing if anything improves.
Your inxi mentions that you use an AMD card, and it's possible it's related. Hopefully someone who knows all about AMD can hop in and help you out ^^
Maybe have a read of the Arch Wiki page for AMDGPU and see if you find anything relevant in there. It mentions things about artifacts in Chromium, Firefox WebRenderer corruption and video acceleration, which may be relevant to the choppy video issue you mentioned before.

I'm not sure if this is the cause, but I don't think it will help.
Enter about:support and go down the page. Here's what mine shows for HARDWARE_VIDEO_DECODING:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=281398
I have another device running Fedora 38. There, hardware acceleration is enabled by default and is NOT "blocklisted by end: Blocklisted by gfxInfo". If it is generally disabled by default for any Linux system, shouldn't that also include this installation of Fedora 38? Or maybe over there they change/overwrite some things when building the package for their repos?
Fedora is patching that: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/fire … aapi.patch
...
// Disable on Release/late Beta
#if !defined(EARLY_BETA_OR_EARLIER)
APPEND_TO_DRIVER_BLOCKLIST(OperatingSystem::Linux, DeviceFamily::All,
nsIGfxInfo::FEATURE_HARDWARE_VIDEO_DECODING,
nsIGfxInfo::FEATURE_BLOCKED_DEVICE,
DRIVER_COMPARISON_IGNORED, V(0, 0, 0, 0),
"FEATURE_HARDWARE_VIDEO_DECODING_DISABLE", "");
#endif
on Linux accelerated video decoding will always be disabled unless you run an early beta (whatever that might be). I have not checked from the source, but I'd assume the Arch package is not an early beta?

mine has:
but can't complain, I have a 2k video for testing that i usually do, and firefox uses the same cpu as mpv.
chromium (and brave and qutebrowser) uses a little more cpu, so firefox is the best option for me to watch "DISTROTUBE" dissing pacman and using snaps.
( even though on browserbench.org , brave has almost, just almost twice the score of firefox )
