Use of my firewire drive crash my system/ don't work

Hello, sorry if my english is a little bit bad, it not my primary language. i’m very better to read english.

I’m new to linux.

I have installed Garuda some month ago. learn and install app, do update, use my computer. The basic.
I love it.

but 2 day ago i wanted to use my dock drive plugged in firewire800 port. but each time i try to use it, the system crash. :worried: I know it worked before. i have used it to copy file in my fresh install of Garuda.

What i try:
the system are all to date with garuda-update

the system crash if i run the drive the time garuda work or during the shutdown (the system don’t shutdown)
i try to run it before i start the computer and the system freeze at the startup (like after the detection of the video card (i see log of something)).
I can run it want i choose the uefi (like boot my old mac partition) so the disk and the firewire port work.

I have boot the garuda install iso and the firewire work. i have access to the disk.

I want to repair that but i don’t know how to do it. :frowning:

garuda-inxi with firewire drive running fail. nothing show.

garuda-inxi without firewire drive running.

Thank for your help and time,

(UPDATE 12 mar 2024)
I have reinstall all the package with garuda assistant, reboot and try again the access to the firewire drive. that don’t do nothing same problem  .

for the firewire if is running at the boot the last line of “log” indicate something like:

tg3 000:02:00.0 vdp access failed

It seem also possible for me to change to the terminal (ctrl alt f3) and connect in this. the system don’t boot in graphical mode. for the limited thing i understand.

Did you need other thing(command, log, ?) to help me?

I tried to search for similar problems online, but did not find anything that matches.
I found recent reports of crashes and reboots, but on Ryzen CPUs, that are supposedly already fixed on kernel 6.7, and some other problems that do not resemble the symptoms close enough and were likely too old to be relevant.
Probably, firewire being quite old and discontinued, and maily used for audio/video, there may be driver bugs still undetected.
Only (sort of) advice I can give is trying with other kernels.
Maybe aur/linux-firewire-utils and aur/gscanbus can be of help in troubleshooting, I don’t know.
Other possibly useful links I found

Welcome to the Garuda forum @maoubi.

I hate to pound this home again, but installing Linux on Apple products will likely cause more problems than any other combination of hardware components.

Is this external FireWire drive formatted using Apple HFS or HFS+?

Are the contents of this drive essential to you?

Have you recently tried reading this drive from a current Garuda Linux iSO?

My own personal recommendations would be:

Install and test the linux-lts kernel.

Boot from your Apple partition. Check the drive with a diagnostic utility for mechanical problems, (immenent failure). Also check the drive for any file system corruption.

If the drive reads/writes on your Apple OS, then backup any files you require from the problematic drive to another known good drive.

IMO, if you want to use this drive with Linux and it currently is formatted with an Apple file system, then wipe the drive, (after backing up the files). Format this drive to a Linux native file system for the least amount of issues when using Linux. I would suggest formatting the drive as ext4 for the greatest Linux compatibility.

If you still want to use this FireWire drive with your Apple partition then you might want to consider a replacement drive for Linux. Hard drives do not last forever, and I’m guessing this drive is getting quite old. For reliability I would seriously consider purchasing a new external drive for use with Linux (formated to a Linux native file system).

Best of luck to you.

i dont understand how linux-firewire-utils works. but i have try gscanbus.

the firewire is detected.
if i put the harddrive in the firewire dock it detect something.
if i remove the harddrive, it remove from gscanbus.
if i put another drive it detect the drive.

here the info gscanbus give me about the port and peripheral (périphérique in french).

did linux have a “log” of something if we connect a peripheral. because if i try to shutdown the computer with the peripherical activate, i can remove it and plug it before brute force the shutdown. The system show some message about that but i dont know how to get that after booting again without firewire?

[tbg]

Is this external FireWire drive formatted using Apple HFS or HFS+?

it a firewire harddrive dock that i can install(plug) a drive. the drive have 2 partitions one that a hfs+ (my old apple partition, the second in exfat.

Are the contents of this drive essential to you?

relatively yes. but i dont need to acces all day.

Have you recently tried reading this drive from a current Garuda Linux iSO?

yes, the firewire and the drive work fine. i have access to the mac and exfat partition.

Boot from your Apple partition. Check the drive with a diagnostic utility for mechanical problems, (immenent failure). Also check the drive for any file system corruption.

i have done that and the drive is OK. also it a ssd drive.

Install and test the linux-lts kernel.

in octopi they have that for linux-lts. which one a need to install? i’m not very good with pamac or pacman???

the external drive was my internal drive of my mac before( i have replace it before from mecanical to ssd that explain that a ssd). i have remove the drive from the imac and install a new fresh ssd in the mac. in this drive i only have garuda install for os. So the only operating system a use now is garuda.

sudo dmesg would be the first place I’d look for interesting messages, but I can’t help.
Expect some “noise” there, try searching for messages that look promising, hopefully someone else can read that… I don’t.

This is very promising, and hints at trying an alternate kernel.

pacman -S linux-lts linux-lts-headers
in general, always install the kernel/headers pair
then boot with the -lts from GRUB “extended options for Garuda” (or something like that, not sure the exact wording)

Please, use last working snapshot.

Did you use a hidden network?

Maybe you must wait for an upstream fix, Garuda can’t help for these errors.

no i dont use hidden network.

i do a fresh reinstall … so i need to reinstall al the thing.

I can use the harddrive dock in usb2 mode temporary but i lost half or little more of the speed under it (usb2 = 450mb, firewire800 =800mb). in my computer the firewire it like my usb3 port for fast acces drive.

where i can communicate to expose my problem about that problem?

Something that was updated obviously broke your FireWire connection.

I would suggest testing further kernels, the linux-lts and linux-hardened kernels are my usual first suggestions when a kernel update may have broken something. These two kernels seem to make change less often than most other kernels, so they are usually the best bets when a breakage occurs.

My other suggestion would be to roll back any firmware versions that were working on your initial installation. You can check your Pacman install log for which firmware versions were the ones that were in use before you updated your system.

i have install and tested with many kernel. lts, mainline, xanmods, no log about they are wrongly installed. i have boot on them but nothing change.

for the firmware did you talk about linux-firmware that update during the initial update of garuda?

in the log of pacman i have that thats was updated about firmware:
linux-firmware 20230804.7be2766d-2
linux-firmware-whence 20230804.7be2766d-2

how i can rollback?

(update)
i have verified this command line for downgrading:
pacman -U file:///var/cache/pacman/pkg/package-old_version.pkg.tar.type

but in the folder i see only them:
linux-firmware-20240220.97b693d2-1-any.pkg.tar.zst.sig
linux-firmware-whence-20240220.97b693d2-1-any.pkg.tar.zst.sig

other soluce to get the old firmware? from the ISO?

(update 2)
A new linux-firmware was in the update 202403XX. So i have updated it but. same problem.
