Hey! Had a genuine and dumb question. I have seen a few people have issues with encryption. But why? what is the use of encryption on our daily drivers?
wiki leaks, adult content, if you know I must kill you and so on
Security. And especially the Confidentiality (privacy) aspect of it.
Even if you feel your system completely secure at home (which is another long story), if someone uses a laptop out from home (office, university, whereever) you may want (depending on your needs) have a certain degree of assurance that your data are not accessed if your laptop is stolen...
If someone breaks into your home and steals your computer, an unencrypted drive allows the thieves to access all of your accounts as your passwords are (probably) on there, perhaps Crypto wallet keys, "private" pictures or any other kind of "private" data you'd not want other's to have access to, especially the kind of people who break into people's homes and steal their stuff.
There's already quite enough hassle and stress dealing with a burglary, without all of ^^ piling on top (when you no longer have a computer to access things the way you usually would and possibly no longer have your access details).
My passwords are among other things in Bitwarden password protected not in the browser, the bank stuff I have in my head, so can steal me only my artwork that is already on the web anyway.
Whether LibreOffice Calc data are really password safe, I do not know, but that I am penniless can be seen in my interior
Another reason to use encrypted drives is that if you delete something, it can't be recovered by any nefarious entity.
Security period. My ssh keys and scripts are all stored encrypted. Everyone can joke about porn and such but the reality is that stuff should be locked up. This also can mean basic things like Libre Office docs. Got a good business idea? Business plan/proposal, top secret this and that for product ideas? Writing a novel...doesn't matter if it's important it is a good idea to have it on an encrypted soemthing.
Of course this can have issues as you mentioned. On some drives/devices there is a nasty performance hit. Loss of keys/passwords etc but that stuff has relevance and parallels all over making it not really an encrypted issue.
I believe prophylactics work, too. I just choose to avoid instances where I need one.
I don’t use it on my desktop but my laptop I do. I also set it to shut off when I close the lid. I only do so because that’s the device I would have on me on a trip so that’s the one I would be more likely to loose and if that happens I don’t want anyone getting access to my personal info. I maybe should for my desktop too but I feel it is a less likely to be stolen or miss placed.
Yeah I started doing this with all my mobile machines. I often worry about the others too though. Home invasions, illegal search and seizure. Who knows! Even natural disasters can be a threat. I mean a land slide, earth quake, flash flood and all your hardware is out in the open, floating down river, just OUT THERE for someone to potentially find and do who knows what with.
I also keep encrypted flash drives on me at all times when I leave my home/office. That way if there is a fire or something insurance might replace the hardware but it won't do jack chit for a life time of code so I keep that backed up and with me. Encrypted because you never know if you might lose something, get mugged, assaulted, car broken into etc.
If my laptop were to ever be stolen, I’d never be able to forgive myself if word got out about my massive Taylor Swift collection. Encryption is key.
Is this where we point out you outted yourself? ;p I think what you MEANT to say was...

I have really gotta stop drinking and forum whoring. . .
(hopefully you saw my edit)
Drinking is good while on the forums, I have a nice coffee I'm drinking right now.
Coffee? Like with bailey’s irish cream? That’s good if you’re about to go out on the town. I do that and Jagerbombs to keep myself awake so I can keep boozing into the wee hours of the night (9-10pm).
Also - I had no idea that’s how you spelled “Taylor Swift” in encryption.
Nope just coffee. I only drink maybe 3 or 4 times a year, which it IS Baileys in coffee around Christmas time.
Yes I used the 10bit finger keymashing hash generator for it.
I feel like you and I have very little in common. . .
Heh, I have very little in common with the bulk of humanity
VGF5bG9yIFN3aWZ0Cg== <-- ;p
I only encrypt my laptop, it's easy to steal and easy to get into, at least if it's encrypted they won't have access to any of my files
Wholly shit! You need something better than encryption…like luggage!
