Unable to boot live (acer)

Check out this note from the ArchWiki Acer Laptop page:

Flaky Secure Boot

Some models have a peculiar Secure Boot implementation which requires the following workaround to boot successfully the installation medium:

  1. To start on a clean slate, clear trusted bootloaders within the Secure Boot settings
  2. Save, reboot, return to UEFI
  3. Add the bootloader as a trusted UEFI file
  • To add a file as a trusted bootloader, you may have to set a supervisor password: do not lose it
  1. Save, reboot, return to UEFI
  2. Disables Secure Boot
  3. The bootloader should now appear in the list even if Secure Boot is disabled

You may have to repeat these steps every firmware update.

Hey all,

I had this problem too on my Acer. I was forced to create a supervisor password to do all the changes mentioned above…

  1. To start on a clean slate, clear trusted bootloaders within the Secure Boot settings
  1. Save, reboot, return to UEFI
  2. Add the bootloader as a trusted UEFI file
  • To add a file as a trusted bootloader, you may have to set a supervisor password: do not lose it

  2. Disables Secure Boot
  3. The bootloader should now appear in the list even if Secure Boot is disabled

Aye, I’ve given this a few tries already. Secure boot mode changes to custom, though I end up with the same results
(Edit)
The only bootloaders it seems to detect are from windows. Can’t set garuda as trusted because it isn’t given as an option

Unfortunately, I do still need binbows for work (I am aware of the risks of dual booting, but it’s been just fine these past two years). Already downgraded it from 11 to 10 so my warranty is probably already void…

Turning fastboot back on and D2D off has caused the ventoy thumbdrive to appear in the trusted efi menu. However, selecting USB0/efi/boot/bootx64.efi gives me the same black screen loop. The device does not appear at all if rufus is used.
We seem to be getting closer to getting things going!

The most annoying part is having to enable secure boot to add any .efi as trusted before turning it back off again. Not sure if or how that affects the process.

Still unable to detect the bootable USB to add it as trusted unless ventoy is used and can’t download anything regardless of browser or network. I still get a CDROM option in the boot menu, just can’t add it to the trust list

If anyone would like a video of what happens, do let me know

My chad, I had the exact same problem as you. You need to upgrade your BIOS.

Hello! The Acer website didn’t give me a bios update option when I checked my model and any similar ones. It is also currently broken and constantly redirects me to the homepage.

I appreciate the attempted help from all of you, but it’s given me so much trouble that I’ll just buy a lenovo instead. I’ve heard those are more linux-friendly…

Cheers! Sorry I couldn’t make it work

Here is the link I used. https://www.acer.com/ae-en/support/product-support/Aspire_A515-48M/downloads

Please send me your old new old one. I promise to make good use of it.

i agree with bro. also, don’t get a lenovo. the last 2 i have gotten had things in the “bios”/motherboard that disabled basic functionality offered by the processor. ie the virtualization stuff

also lenovo shouldn’t be endorced due to them fragmenting the market via burning amd chips to only work with certain of their models of hardware

the entire issue in this thread is trying to keep windows. that isn’t going to be easy/may not work no matter what brand of system you go with

edit: Sorry bro, i was also dealing with a user nicked BMO and haven’t finished first coffee yet
