System monitor fallen back into software rendering mode

Hello,

So I noticed 2 days ago that my profile image and one of my desktop widgets (GPU monitor) quit working. I wanted to see if the gpu was ok so I opened the system monitor and none of the graphics there are working.

At the top of the system monitor window it says “system monitor has fallen back to software rendering because hardware acceleration is not available, and visual glitches may appear. Please check your graphics driver.”

So I checked the driver and compared with the recommended driver from nvidia and they do not match, I have quite an old card (1070) and the version nvidia suggests is older than the one I have.

I attempted to run the .run file in konsole and was met with 2 warnings.

  1. That I am running X server and that installing the driver while that is running can cause problems.
  2. That the nvidia kernel module is running and this would interfere with sanity checks.

The question I have is how do I install this .run file to role back my driver without this feature running?

A second question, if you will permit me, is how do I stop the garuda system updater from overriding this role back?

Pretty new to all this

Please do not install drivers from the nvidia website, you are using Linux and NOT Windows.

All drivers are in the appropriate repositories, and you already have the correct driver installed:

and the drivers are also loaded:

For some reason the hardware acceleration is not working for you.

Open /var/log/Xorg.0.log with an editor and copy the entire content to Garuda PrivateBin and share the generated link here. If you do not have Xorg.0.log under the above path, then look here ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log.

Thanks for the help

My bad on the attempted driver roll back, they are not too uncommon on windows. However I did make sure to download the linux_64 driver. But in the future I will refer issues here before fumbling around myself and use the repositories rather than nvidia’s site.

Here is the link you asked for

https://bin.garudalinux.org/?0ee30c7aecba09b7#E8rCRKwKDJCcP6LZxZb9uSzpFUGNRyf5z3d6znDHKR8V

While I waited for a reply I did some more poking around and found that green with envy is also not working and is giving me this message.

GWE only works on x11 and not on wayland. On wayland you use

nvidia-settings

instead.

Edit: Xorg.0.log is clean.
Do you have more xorg.logs under /var/log/, for example Xorg.2.log?
If so → Garuda PrivateBin.

Thanks for letting me know that green with envy is not needed, honestly never opened it before all this.

There is a Xorg.0.log.old here is the link

https://bin.garudalinux.org/?287b010e675ffd99#Cwg3Xcist9sJXXjc35Mc9LTZMWN8xqsfAx63Y4sF3Wgy

This is not helpful (but it is also clean).
What does it look like under ~/.local/share/xorg/?

use Lact if you want a tool like this for wayland an x11 as well

There is no Xorg in that directory.

Ok.

The problem should be that Plasma falls back to the software renderer. Do you get a dialog like “QtQuickRenderer-blah-blah” on the desktop from time to time?

Post the complete content of ~/.config/kdeglobals directly here in the forum (use a code block for it).

Your BIOS is extremely out of date. You should update it as soon as possible as you are missing out on a ton of improvements to stability and performance (along with security updates and the like).

I dont recall getting any dialog boxes.

heres the contents of that file.

Yeah, I’ve always been wary of bios flashes, obviously. but hey its probably time to just dive in.

That seems to have worked.

Thanks so much

I also updated the bios thanks for the suggestion.
