System Freezing Soon After Full-Screening a Video in FireDragon - Journal Gives a Pipewire Error

Hey All,

Issue just started today 4/18/24 - I was trying to watch some videos online and my system locked up, rebooted, locked up again. I checked journalctrl and found the following that happens before every crash:

I used snapper to restore to before my System Update last night, same issue, can’t go further back now thanks to creating more snapshots while troubleshooting. I’ve powerflushed the system, reinstalled ALL my pipewire packages, but am now lost as to what to try next since I am pretty new to Linux overall. I was watching video and gaming fine yesterday, the build date on pipewire is from the 15th, but I am not sure how I would downgrade every single package to try that. Per the title, the issue only seems to happen with videos in fullscreen, Spotify and other audio doesn’t crash as far as I can tell. I will be testing my games through Steam next. Any help would be appreciated!

Actually, I think I finally fixed it, Octopi wouldn’t let me reinstall FireDragon (there’s a duplicate for some reason) but after clearing my caches and resetting the User.js back to default it doesn’t seem to be crashing since I posted. Will keep this open to make sure, but it’s possible when the Browser updated on the 16th something triggered this issue and I just needed to reset.

Issues back again after another system update, something is re-applying that breaks FireDragon playing videos in fullscreen. This time clearing cache and resetting the user.js is not fixing it. I don’t know what’s going on to be honest. I was able to reinstall FireDragon this time and still no luck… Pipewire error is the same.

Update: Reinstalling Video Driver did not fix
Changing Adaptive sync to Auto from Always seemed to extend how long I went without crashing but didn’t get rid of it, and I don’t want to disable that because of my games. Also note I have no problems with the games, so this wouldn’t appear to be faulty hardware, entire PC is only a year old.

i think all our issues are the same, related to this:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=485730

For now, revert back to 6.0.3

Thanks, I’ll try this, I did notice the stuttering and half fps in Helldivers 2, but switching from Proton GE back to 8 Stable fixed it so I didn’t think anything of it being the system.

I think this is it, I was able to get through several YouTube videos and Helldivers is back to getting my max frame rate on Proton GE. Thank you for doing god’s work cause I was wracking my brain for 2 days. Issue is a bug with KWin 6.0.4-1
I will wait until it’s been released in the repos before I update my system again.

The fix per DyingKino on Reddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/1c835fp/arch_kde_crashes_when_fullscreen/

It’s most likely this bug introduced in 6.0.4: 485730 – Severe stuttering with Plasma 6.0.4
There’s also already a fix in: scene/workspacescene: don't check direct scanout candidates for a pixmap (!5626) · Merge requests · Plasma / KWin · GitLab

You can downgrade to 6.0.3 by setting Server=https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2024/04/16/$repo/os/$arch in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist and running sudo pacman -Syyuu.

Note: you have to put that Server URL at the top under all the comments for it to work. It will downgrade all packages to the time of the 16th.

This issue has been patched as of today, Monday, 22 April 2024 07:45:47 EDT.

Anyone experiencing this or similar issues should system update.
